65th Season Opener Postponed

PLATTSBURGH – Airborne Park Speedway officials have decided to postpone the opening day weekend due to wet conditions and an unfavorable forecast.

With heavy rains Wednesday into Thursday morning the speedway grounds have become saturated, especially on the out skirts of the race track itself.

"The runoff area on the backstretch is so bad that the four-wheel drive tractor I was driving was sliding all around, so I can just imagine a Modified leaving the racing surface and ending up in the billboards," Airborne Park Speedway Promoter John Walker said. “I take safety very seriously and I’m not about to put someone in danger by tearing up equipment or getting someone hurt.”

With the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series scheduled for this weekend, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to have those competitors haul all the way here just to get turned around and sent home.

“I really was exited to get going this weekend,” Walker added. “The track handled the winter really well and was 100% ready to go, in fact, it was put into race mode on Tuesday evening and Bruce Richards and I were very satisfied with the outcome.”

The DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series race will be rescheduled at a later date and opening day will now be May 5 with Law Enforcement Night presented by Day Brothers Boats & RVs. Post time 6 p.m.
