Sportsman Mods gear up for ACT 300 weekend

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH – Airborne Park Speedway’s deepest and most competitive division, the J&S Steel Sportsman Modifieds, will be out in force as a part of Sunday’s American Canadian Tour (ACT) International 300.

The open-wheel Sportsman Modifieds feature an abundance of local talent including Airborne championship points leader Travis Bruno of Morrisonville, defending track champion Nick Heywood and Jason Durgan, both from Plattsburgh, Mark Lamberton of Mooers Forks and Keeseville’s Jamie LaFountain.

Heywood is the New York State leader in NASCAR points. His closest pursuers statewide are Bruno and Long Island driver Howie Brode whose home track is Riverhead Speedway on Long Island.

In NASCAR’s Division 1 national rankings, for which any races that the Sportsman Modifieds are designated as the headline division are taken into account, Durgan, driver of the Valley View Firewood/Maple Grand Farms No. 17, is currently ranked 16th nationally.

Because Airborne is racing in 2014 under NASCAR sanction - for the first time in decades – Airborne’s Sportsman drivers are classified as rookies. Durgan leads South Carolina driver Joe Wilder by four points in the battle for national NASCAR All-American Weekly Series Rookie of the Year honors.

“It’s going to be a good weekend of racing,” predicts Durgan. “The NASCAR points are going to be a help to me, I’m hoping, and our 50-lap race pays $1,000-to-win. There’s a good payout through the top-10.”

The ACT Late Model 200, comprised of three segments (50, 75, 75) pays $25,000-to-win. Sunday’s card includes the J&S Steel Sportsman Modifieds, ACT Tiger Sportsman Twin 25’s and a 50-lap ProCam Truck event. Post time is 1 p.m.

Advanced sale tickets for the event are available now from the ACT office. Sunday reserved seat tickets are just $35, adult general admission is $25 and kids (ages 6 to 12) are just $5.
