Seventh Heaven!

For the first time in 645 days, Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) has finally returned to the top step in a Pro Dirt Series feature and what better way to do it than by winning the Ray Tulk Memorial at his home track for the seventh time!

In a race that had it all, it would be Warren who got his Pro Dirt Series title defense off to the best possible start with an earlier heat win helping to put him on the front row of the opening night feature race at the Ellenbrook Speedway.

Other heat wins were shared by Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components), Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing), and Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:), with Jamie doing enough to claim pole position alongside Warren for the thirty-lap feature event.

As the race went green Warren and Jamie hit the line together, Jamie with just the barest of margins in front, before Warren shot by going through turn one into the lead.

Behind them, the third Oldfield brother Jason (Oldfield Racing) also shot around the outside from his sixth starting position into third.

The completion of lap one saw the Oldfield trio in front, leading National Champion Chalmers and from here the top four began to pull away as Jay Cardy was fighting to hold off a pack of cars in fifth.

Jamie over the next few laps would set about closing the gap on Warren and as the duo came to complete the fifth circulation, he would make it look effortless as he cruised around the top to take the lead.

Lapped traffic would come into play a lap later, but did little to slow the Oldfield boys, Chalmers forced to just sit back and watch, waiting for a chance that simply did not come.

Cardy would continue to hold down fifth with Brad Blake, Ken Macpherson (KMM - Ken Macpherson Motorsport) and Freddy Kinsella (Team Green Racing) all in a titanic struggle behind him.

With ten laps complete Chalmers had fallen off the back of the Oldfield’s and was running a lonely race in fourth as Warren did all he could to find a way back past Jamie, but nothing was doing.

Lap twelve saw Blake continue his charge and grab fifth from Cardy, with Macpherson following him through a lap later.

Kinsella would then join the fray once again and get past both Macpherson and Cardy to be sixth at the halfway point.

Back up front and Jamie finally had a moment in traffic and that was all Warren needed, capitalising by driving right past him on the front straight to complete lap sixteen.

Quicky Warren built a gap, but he too would come up on a wall of lapped cars as lap twenty ticked by ticked by, which was enough to keep Jamie, and of course Jason who was also right on their tails, interested.

Just as this was happening, the red lights came on as Cardy and Rob Wells (CTM Recruitment Racing) came together on the front straight, Cardy launching sideways and skyward and somehow just avoiding going officially upside down, but crashing back down onto the back of his once immaculate #52 machine.

Both cars would be eliminated, and the race would restart with eleven laps remaining.

Jason blew by Jamie for second on the restart, while Chalmers suddenly slowed and went infield, the race now seeing Warren leading Jason and Jamie. Blake was now elevated into fourth with nine laps remaining and Kinsella also raced into fifth.

In the dying stages of the race there was plenty of action, but the main positions would not change, Warren breaking the drought and claiming his thirtieth Pro Dirt Series feature win.

He would officially defeat Jason Oldfield and Jamie Oldfield in an Oldfield trifecta, while Blake and Kinsella would round out the top five.

It was an epic way to start the season and has certainly set the standard of what can be expected for the rest of the series. We can’t wait to do it all again next week at the Perth Motorplex for round two!
