By Ray Cunningham
Osborn, Mo: Friday night at U.S. 36 Speedway Wesley Smith of Nixa, Missouri put on a clinic winning both his heat and then the 25 lap feature for the USAC MWRA Non Winged Sprints driving the John Helm Racing/WSR Racing #12 to take victory in the first race for the MWRA in 2022.
Smith who won his 7th all-time feature with this USAC Series would twice carve up lapped traffic slicing and dicing his way thru the originally scheduled 24 car field before two red flag situations interrupted his dominate run. First for Chad Winfrey flipping coming out of turn two, and then later after Todd McVay went off the track going down the back stretch. Neither driver was injured.
After that Smith successfully navigated his way to victory, his second feature win in as many weeks over Cody Baker from Lone Jack, Mo. running second in the THR Racing/Tribble/Baker Racing #9, with fellow Lone Jack Resident Braydon Cromwell fresh off graduation from high school taking the final podium spot in his Cromwell Racing #4. Wyatt Burks from Topeka, KS. running the Don Rumsey #11w coming home in 4th, and Xavier “X-Man” Doney of Odessa, Mo. running 5th after advancing 8 spots in his Doney/Lawson #74.
Rounding out the top 10 on this fine night for racing in Northwest Missouri was Oak Grove, Missouri’s Brian Scott Beebe running sixth, Spring Hill Kansas wheelman Chad Goff finishing 7th, Chris Parkinson of Gladstone, Mo. coming home 8th, Dakota Earls of Independence, Mo. in 9th, and Zach Clark of Olathe, Kansas, finishing 10th. While Earls would take the J.D. Justin Lawson Media Cash as the hard Charger award winner after advancing 9 spots in the feature.
Earlier in the evening after a brief shower came and went on this wonderful night for non winged sprint action, The “Sheriff” Wyatt Burks would take the first heat race win. With Clark holding off Baker for a w in heat race number 2. And the before mentioned Smith would charge his way to victory in heat number 3.
