Burks prevails on Weld Memorial Night at Lakeside Speedway
By Sam Stoecklin (Kansas City, KS) -- Racing on the River’s Edge continued Friday evening at Lakeside Speedway with race number 14 and the Weld Memorial. The USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association highlighted the evening’s action. B-Mods, Stock Cars, E-Mods, and guest class Mod-Lites also competed throughout the night.
A total of 82 entries signed in for the race program with 20 USAC Wingless Sprints, 16 B-Mods, 13 Stock Cars, 16 E-Mods, and 17 Mod-Lites. Drivers competed in 11 preliminary heat races to set the stage for the night’s five main events to close out the night.
USAC Midwest Wingless Sprints Recap: In the final USAC Wingless Sprint Car event of the year at Lakeside, Brian Beebe collected the heat one victory ahead of Wesley Smith. Chad Tye took the second heat over Kyle Lewis with Wyatt Burks commanding heat three ahead of Cody Baker. Burks and Zach Daum occupied row one of the starting grid for the 25-lap feature. Burks and Daum ran strong at the front of the field as eighth-starting Cody Baker and fifth-starting Wesley Smith made their way into the top five. Point’s contender Smith also moved forward by race end to keep the championship battle close. After a series of position swapping among the top three at the front of the field, Burks went on to capture his second Midwest Wingless Sprint Car victory of the season at Lakeside Speedway. Baker moved to second at the finish with Daum taking the final podium position. Smith and Jack Wagner rounded out the top five with point’s leader Don Droud, Jr., in sixth.
Mod-Lites Recap: A pair of heat races staged the field for the night’s 12-lap main event with David Raffurty leading the way in the opening heat ahead of Michael Raffurty and Travis Alexander. Dillon Raffurty rolled to the win for heat two with Jeff and Justin Raffurty second and third. After passing points were accumulated, Jeff Raffurty and Travis Alexander earned front-row starting positions. Father and son duo David and Dillon Raffurty began the 12-lap main event from row two but it didn’t take them long to move forward in the race as they quickly moved to the front leaving Jeff Raffurty and Alexander to fight for third. Justin and Michael Raffurty ran solidly up the ranks as they both advanced positions. However, as he’s done so many times this season, Dillon Raffurty was too strong at the front of the field and drove to his third victory of the season in five appearances. David Raffurty ran second to his son with Justin, Michael, and Jeff completing the all-Raffurty top five finish.
B-Mods Recap: Heat Race preliminary events went to Kyle Henning over Tim Powell and Trevor Hunt in heat one while Patrick Royalty took the second win over Don Marrs and Austin Charles. Royalty and Powell took the front-row honors at the start of the 15-lap B-Mod feature. Royalty was in search of his fifth victory on the year as Powell was hoping to capture his first of the season after a string of runner-up finishes. Royalty and Powell were at the top of their game at the front of the field, but it was 16th-starting Randy Ainsworth of Excelsior Springs who thrilled fans with his run to the top five by race end. Meanwhile Don Marrs also ran strong with Luke Nieman with his sights on a top-five run. Ultimately, Royalty went on to capture his fifth victory of the season and eleventh top-five finish as he extended his point’s lead over Luke Nieman. It was the second week in a row Royalty took the main event. Powell again finished second with Marrs third, Ainsworth charged to fourth while Nieman completed the top five.
Stock Cars Recap: Brett Heeter began his night with a win in the opening Stock Car heat with Thomas Ground and Eddie Ingram in tow while Gary Donaldson led the way in heat two over Jaylen Wettengel and Ed Griggs. Passing point’s set the stellar front row for the 15-lap main event for the Stock Cars as Donaldson and Heeter captured the front row positions. Up front, Griggs pressured Heeter for the win the entire race distance. Several cautions slowed the race but Heeter kept up the momentum to fend off Griggs for the victory. The win was Heeter’s fifth of the season and ninth top-five run as he continued to cut into Tim Shields’ point lead late in the season. Griggs settled for runner-up on this night with Jaylen Wettengel third. Thirteenth-starting Chad Clancy looked strong during his Lakeside return and advanced to fourth by race end while point’s leader Tim Shields held on for fifth.
E-Mods Recap: Point’s leader Rodney Schweizer began his night on high note with the heat one victory ahead of Brayden Bennett and Trevor Hand with Mike Richardson taking heat two over Adam Schelert and Jason Park. Bennett and Schweizer led the field to the initial green flag for the 15-lap main event. Point’s contender Steven Makar had a nightmare evening as his misfortune continued at the start of the feature as he lost a drive shaft prior to the main event. Schweizer ran strong with Trevor Hand and Mike Richardson inside the top three as Bennett slipped from contention. Schweizer appeared to have the race covered but Hand made a late-race charge and ultimately went on to collect his fifth win of the season to keep the standings close with Schweizer in one of the tightest championship battles of the season. Richardson moved up to finish second with Schweizer rounding out the top three. Jason Park advanced to fourth with Brian Andrews gaining two spots for a top-five finish.
