Burks mounts winning charge at U.S. 36 Raceway

By Jacob Blair (Osborn, MO) -- – It took three tries, but the Bud Shootout at US 36 Raceway proved worth the wait.

A full-field of USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association Driver’s took to the high banks to fight for the prestigious Bud Shootout win. Pole-sitter Wesley Smith paced the field through the first half of the race. Chris Parkinson followed in second, while Wyatt Burks began working through the field from his ninth place starting position.

The story in this race became lap traffic as the leaders found it early and often. Smith had a solid lead entering lap traffic, while Burks used the traffic to move around Parkinson for second. Once Burks chased down Smith, it was again lapped traffic that helped Burks move into the lead. After dealing with a late race restart, Burks drove his car into Westfall GMC Victory Lane. On that late restart, Parkinson made the pass on Smith for second. Smith finished third. Koby Barksdale charged from a 12th place starting position to finish fourth, with Kory Schudy completing the top five.

The Sprint Series of Nebraska portion of the Bud Shootout witnessed a dominating performance from second place starter Joey Danley. Danley led the entire 25-lap feature in comfortable fashion on his way to the win. Tyler Drueke moved up from fifth to finish second, while Stuart Snyder drove up from ninth to finish third. The hard charger of the race was Monty Ferriera, as he finished fourth after starting 15th. Kenny Potter completed the top five.

The IMCA Modified feature became a tale of two halves of the race. Half number one went to Brandon Williams as he looked to have the car to beat. Leading comfortably, a lapped car made contact with Williams, forcing him pit side and ending his night. Steven Bowers Jr. inherited the lead, after moving up from an eighth place starting position, and dominated the remaining half of the feature.

The battle for second though proved to be the race of the night. Chad Andersen and Josh Munsen traded sliders and neither could hang onto the second place position for more than a corner. Munsen beat out the current point leader of Andersen at the line on finish second. Mark Schafman made use of a late race restart to propel himself into a fourth place finish, while Chad Clancy finished fifth.

In the IMCA Sport Mods, Tim Eaton found victory lane for the first time in 2020 at US 36. Eaton led most of the race, but had pressure from Chris Wright and Steven Clancy all race long. However, Wright and Clancy battled for second amongst themselves, allowing Eaton a few car lengths and enough breathing room to get the win. Wright finished second and Clancy third. Tim Stallbaumer finished fourth with Jeffrey Sears finishing out the top five.

Up next at US 36 is a second night of racing for the weekend on Saturday, July 4.. The IMCA Modifieds battle for $1,000 to win, with the IMCA Stock Cars, E-Modifieds and Pure Stocks also on the card.
