Wesley Smith triumphs at Bethany

By Chet Querry (Bethany, MO) -- After starting the season with record setting numbers, Bethany Speedway didn't set any new records, but still provided the fans with the most exciting door to door bumper to bumper racing action around on a nearly perfect track. 91 cars checked in for racing in six different classes as the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars had the night off. They will return at our next race on July 18. In their place were the USAC Midwest Wingless Sprints.

First up was the Emod class. #104 took the lead at the drop of the green flag. #15 Josh Adkins was in second. #28 Shawn Burns knew he had to move quick. He moved to the top of the track and started picking off cars one by one. Burns worked his way to the lead as Couch seemed to have a problem developing and slowy started drifting back. Adkins continued to run second until three of the top six cars got tangled up. #54 Chris Dishong made his return to Bethany Speedway and missed that situation while #3H, young, Tyler Harril followed him safely thru. Burns led the field back to the green flag and picked up his first feature win at Bethany Speedway in 2020. #55J Josh Marshall started the race in the front, drifted to the back, then drove back to the front in the closing laps to cross the finish line second. But after tech, he was Dqed. That put Dishong in the second spot. #5k Keith Simmons found his way back to third after an early race mishap. Harrill held on to fourth while #74 Justin Asher, who won both races so far, finished fifth.

Next were the Pure Stocks. #15 Justin Adkins jumped out to an early lead for a few laps. But #23 Logan Headley, who won opening night, wasn't about to waste his trip to the track. Headley brought #18k Kasey Ayres and #20x Nate Barnes to the front with him. Ayres would flash the nose to the inside of Headley for several laps but just never found a good spot to get beside him. Headley went on to pull away a few car lengths and take his second win of the season at Bethany Speedway. Ayres finished second while Barnes watched it all in third. #7 Spence Reiff, who started deep in the field continued his appearance finishing fourth with Adkins in fifth.

The IMCA Sportmods were next. 15 laps of constant side by side racing. Shuffling the running order every lap. Until #T25 Tim Stallbaumer found his way to the front and never looked back as he picked up the win from his eighth starting spot. #211 Tim Eaton held the lead for a few laps about mid race and finished second. #12x Steven Clancy and #66x Chris Wright stayed in close contact the entire race and finished third and fourth. #007 Zach Nitsch finished fifth.

The first appearance ever for the USAC Midwest Wingless Sprint Cars saw 23 of them sign in the pits. A full field would come to the green flag, lead by #11W Wyatt Burks from the pole. Burks won two of the three appearances for the Non Winged Sprint Cars last year. He took the point and had complete control of the feature until a yellow flag came out just passed half way. Although Burks still looked fast before the yellow, something didn't look quite right on the rearend of Burns car. When they went back to green #12 Wesley Smith flew to the top lane and into the lead and the win. Burks fought off all challenges to finish second as he was obviously just a little slower. #31 Quinton Benson finished third with #28 Koby Schudy and #11W Don Droud Jr fourth and fifth.

The IMCA Stock Car feature started with #34 Mich Ross and #11s Steve Starmer on the front row. From the drop of the green flag for about four laps they stayed side by side with Ross on bottom and Starmer on top. Starmer adjusted his line to the bottom as the top lost just a little speed after an early caution and followed Ross for a few laps. The top changed as it had very few cars on it for a few laps and Starmer went back up there. While all that was happening #46 JJ Baumli was working his way thru the field and into third position. Starmer made the cushion work the last 5 laps and ran side by side the last five laps with Ross. At the checkered Starmer drove to the point where he picked up his first win of 2020 at Bethany Speedway. Ross was a close second with Baumli third. #93 Sam Scott has back to back top five finishes with a fourth and #21x Jon Boller Jr finished fifth.

Finally the IMCA Modifieds were ready for the track. The track had been so good all night, but the modified guys had no clue what they were in for. #81j Jacob Blair took the lead on lap one. #52m Dustin Miller took over and led a hand full of laps. #21c Chad Clancy took the lead. #22H Clay Hale got turned around and got clipped by #77 Steven Bowers. Hale couldn't continue. Bowers returned and tagged the back with a badly bent front end. Back to green. Clancy had the lead but Bowers was driving his race car as hard as he could to keep it handling correctly. If he let off the gas the front end would settle and both front tires would cause it to have a bad push. So Bowers got on top and lap after lap hit the cushion. Clancy didn't know he was coming and Bowers got around him on the outside and went on to pick up the win. Clancy was second. #19 Josh Munsen finished third with Miller fourth and Blair fifth.
