Droud wins Midwest Wingless main at Lakeside Speedway

By Lakeside Speedway PR (Kansas City, KS) -- Friday’s ‘Racing on the River’s Edge’ was another successful night of action at Kansas City’s oldest sporting venue as 83 race teams filed their way in for competition. Drivers on hand included 21 USAC Midwest Wingless Sprints, 23 B-Mods, 12 Pure Stocks, 17 Stock Cars, and 10 E-Mods. Fans witnessed a total of 16 events.

It was the first-ever appearance of the USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association, and the inaugural main event winner was Don Droud, Jr. By the end of the night Andy Bryant, Brett Heeter, Trevor Hand, and Garry Billings, Jr., also added their names to the main event winner’s list.

USAC Midwest Wingless Sprint Cars Recap: Heat 1 Top Three: 15b Quinton Benson, 89 Todd McVay, 18 Terry Richards, Jr. Heat 2 Top Three: 28 Kory Schudy, 2k Kyle Lewis, 1m Don Droud, Jr. Heat 3 Top Three: 11w Wyatt Burns, 5bb Robert Talley, 82 Christie Thomason. Droud and Lewis took the initial green flag for the 25-lap main event for the sprints from row one. Droud led the first-ever main event opening lap at Lakeside Speedway for the USAC Midwest Wingless Sprints and kept his #1m machine in front of Benson, Kory Schudy, Wyatt Burns, and Kyle Lewis through the first fifth of the race. A yellow flag flew on lap six to reset the field with Droud leading the way. Caution again flew on lap eight just as Droud was enjoying over a second lead on Benson. Droud held strong leading the way and built up a second-and-a-half lead over Schudy, who moved to second by lap 15 with Burns advancing to third. By lap 18, Schudy cut Droud’s lead to seven-tenths of a second with Burns, Benson, and Chris Parkinson behind him inside the top five. Burns stayed within a half second by the white flag lap, but caution flew for a third time on lap 24 of 25, setting up a showdown for the victory. It was Droud’s race to win or lose but event a green-white-checkered flag finish couldn’t keep him out of victory lane as he ultimately took the win over Burns, Benson, Parkinson, and Todd McVay in front of the enthusiastic crowd of appreciative open-wheel fans.

B-Mods Recap: Heat Race 1 Top Three: 81 Austin Charles, 8 Terry Bruner, 0 Chase Galvan. Heat 2 Top Three: 17t Shadren Turner, 44h Trevor Hunt, 28 Andy Bryant. Heat 3 Top Three: 181 Luke Nieman, 3x3 Nick Newton, 10c Christopher Connel. Charles and Newton earned the most preliminary heat race passing points and began the 20-lap B-Mod main event from row one. However, by the end of lap one, the entire front-end of the field had been shuffled as fifth-starting Andy Bryant grabbed the lead ahead of Nieman, Newton, Turner, Charles. Caution flew over the field at lap three with Bryant at the front. Caution again flew one lap later by lap six to keep the field bunched together behind Bryant. For the next three laps, Bryant built his lead over Nieman to 1.3 seconds, but caution again flew by lap nine. The drivers found their groove as they raced hard to keep pace with Bryant, but by lap 15 and five laps to go, he held a 2.3-second advantage ahead of Nieman and Newton. Meanwhile, fourteenth starting Tim Powell found his way into the top five inside of five laps to go. Once again Bryant proved too tough to beat and prevailed in the evening’s final main event. Nieman was strong in second with Newton, Powell, and Chase Galvan completing the top five. It was Bryant’s second win of the year.

Stock Cars Recap: Heat Race 1 Top Three: 42t Tim Shields, 41k Vernon Kever, 21 Vic Tranckino. Heat Race 2 Top Three: 28 Gary Donaldson, 05 Brett Heeter, 91j Jaylen Wettengel. Shields and Heeter setup their showdown to command the 15-lap Stock Car main event from the front row for the stock cars. Heeter shot out to an early lead with Shields and Donaldson left to battle for second. By lap five, Heeter enjoyed a 1.2-second lead over Shields, Donaldson, Kever, and Wettengel inside the top five but caution on the speedway waved shortly thereafter on lap five for a four-car incident, which paused the race for several minutes. After the accident was cleared, Heeter went back to work pulling away from his closest pursuer and by lap 12 had more than a three second advantage over Donaldson, who had moved to second. At the checkers, it was once again Heeter who took the victory ahead of Donaldson, Tim Shields, Tranckino, and Kevin Anderson. The win was Heeter’s third of the season.

E-Mods Recap: Heat Race Top Three: 236 Trevor Hand, 4m Steven Makar, 74 Rodney Schweizer. Hand and Makar began the night’s 12-lap E-Mod main from row one and it was Hand who grabbed the early lead ahead of Makar, Schweizer, Andrews, and Jeremy Curless through lap five. By lap 8, Hand built his lead to nearly four seconds over Makar, Schweizer, Andrews, and McIntire. In a race that took less than eight minutes to complete, Hand easily took the victory, his second of the season in a dominating performance. Makar finished a strong second while Schweizer picked up his fifth-consecutive top-five finish to come home third ahead of Andrews and Justin Bell.

Pure Stocks Recap: Heat 1 Top Three: 7 Marshall Jewett, 7x Spencer Reiff, 3b Darrin Christy. Heat Race 2 Top Three: 96 Garry Billings, Jr., 56 Joseph Smith, Jr., 14 Cody Ohrenberg. Billings and Jewett continued their early season quest for dominance by starting the 12-lap main event from pole position. Billings was tough out o the gate while Jewett’s night came to an early end by lap three. Billings maintained his lead through a lap 9 caution ahead of Smith, Reiff, Christy, and Matt Janes in the top five. Reiff advanced to second by lap 10 after the restart while Ohrenberg moved to fourth by the white-flag lap. Billings was the man to beat once again as he collected his third win of the year and fifth top-five finish in as many races to start the year. Reiff finished second, followed by Smith, Ohrenberg, and Christy to complete the top five.
