July 31, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Hartford, OH)... The Pace Performance RUSH Sportsman Modified Series together with Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC were in action at on Saturday night at Sharon Speedway for a Hovis Auto & Truck Supply Touring Series event part of the Wedge Motorsports "Route 7 Rumble" Series. A season high 29 cars were on hand topping the previous high of 27 from the week prior at Sharon. It was the eighth annual "Manufacturers Night" presented by MSD Performance as the 27 eligible racers shared in $23,000 of valuable product giveaways! Kole Holden was the big prize winner earning nearly $2,000 in products including the grand prize of TBM Tornado Brake Calipers and a complete Set of 4130 Black FK Rod Ends! The complete product giveaway winners list is posted below.
Hovis Weekly Series and Sharon points leader, Chas Wolbert, rebounded from drawing a 96 pill to move forward in both his heat race and the Ohio Intra Express Dash to earn the outside pole starting spot. Wolbert then led all 25 laps, and other than surviving four restarts on laps 19-20, went uncontested for the $600 Tour win- the sixth of his career but first of the season.
"The track really changed from the heat races but we made a couple of adjustments and are blessed to be here," explained the Warren, Ohio winner less than two hours shy of his 27th birthday. "I could roll the middle when we came to lapped cars, but the bottom was where it was at for me. I love Sharon Speedway; it's a great facility. Thank you to Dave Willoughby and all the staff so we have such a great place to race at."
Wolbert drove around Kyle Martell on the start with Rob Kristyak passing Jacob Wolfe for third. Sixth starting Justin Shea was up to fourth on lap three after dropping Wolfe back another spot. Kristyak drove around Martell in turns one and two for second on lap five, but faced a 2.3-second deficit from Wolbert. Lapped traffic came into play on lap 10 for Wolbert, while Shea was all over Martell in the race for third. While Wolbert stayed on the bottom, Kristyak was hammering the top right around the fence.
A caution for rookie Lucas Canon slowed action with 19 laps completed. Under caution, Kristyak had to exit to the pits with a flat tire after contact with the fence and a lapped car, but was able to change the tire and return to competition. Shea inherited third; however, lost power under the caution and was done for the night. Shea was awarded the TBM Brakes "Tough Brake of the Night".
Two more cautions slowed action on laps 19 and 20, before the final five laps went green-to-checkered. Wolfe had dropped to fifth, but with Kristyak and Shea out of the mix was back to third for the restart. When racing resumed on lap 21, Wolfe passed 10th starting Tony Tatgenhorst for second. Wolfe was unable to challenge Wolbert, who went uncontested in the closing laps taking the checkered flag first by 1.785 seconds in his Alcon Mechanical/Dunkin Donuts of Warren, OH/C.T. Wolbert Trucking/Walters Building Co./Ohio Intra Express/Russ King Racing/BCT Construction-sponsored #c3. The victory was Wolbert's all-time leading 18th of his career at Sharon and 41st overall in RUSH Sportsman Modified competition.
Wolfe, who won his first career race on June 26 at Sharon, backed up his runner-up Expo Speedway Tour finish with another excellent second place run to lead the Hovis Tour points. "I gave it everything I had but he's (Wolbert) just fast," acknowledged the 24-year-old Warren, Ohio driver. "I'm just happy to be in second place and where we're at."
Tatgenhorst was a solid third. "It was a good run for us," expressed the 41-year-old Columbiana, Ohio racer. "Anytime we're standing on the frontstretch is good. We put ourselves behind the eight-ball in the heat race and had to start deep. I'm really happy with a third place finish- this is really great for us. We're getting closer and closer every week to getting a win here. This place is awesome and the track is smooth- it's really everything you ever want at least in my book."
J.C. Boyer, who started eighth, had a career best fourth place finish holding off Kristyak, who charged back through the field to complete the top five. Kristyak was selected as the Sherwood Wheels "Man of Steel" recipient. Kristyak had excellent luck in the "Manufacturers Night" drawings taking home $1,675 of product including a Lincoln Electric 140C welder and cart along with a complete set of 4130 Black FK Rod Ends!
Martell dropped to sixth at the finish as Brandon Ritchey, Kole Holden, 15th starting Clayton Deems, and Friday night's Raceway 7 winner Preston Cope completed the top 10. Kristyak, Shea, and Wolbert won the heat races. Martell picked up $100 for winning the Ohio Intra Express Dash. Gary Haupt won the last chance B main.
The Pace RUSH Sportsman Modifieds will be in action next weekend with a pair of Hovis Weekly Series events on Friday night (August 6) at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Ohio and Saturday night at Sharon part of the Wedge Motorsports "Route 7 Rumble" Series. The next Hovis Touring Series event will take place at Sharon during the "Apple Festival Nationals" weekend on September 10-11.
