Race of Champions
CHAMPIONS AND INDIVIDUALS HONORED AT RACE OF CHAMPIONS 2018 SEASON-ENDING CELEBRATION
The Race of Champions Series family of participants, officials and fans gathered at the Genesee River Restaurant & Reception Center in Mount Morris (NY) for an evening of awards, accolades and celebration to conclude the 2018 championship season, where over 50 different point fund and special awards were presented.
Honored as series champions were Chuck Hossfeld of Ransomville, NY (Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series); Joe Mancuso of Buffalo, NY (Race of Champions Super Stock); Scott Wylie of Blasdell, NY (Race of Champions Sportsman Modified); Eldon King, III of Delevan, NY (Race of Champions Late Models); Brad Rouse of St. Catharines, Ont., CAN (Race of Champions 602 Dirt Sportsman Modified) and Travis Montgomery of Ontario, NY (Race of Champions Four Cylinder Dash Series).
“Our team had a great season,” stated Hossfeld, accepting his fourth Race of Champions Modified Series championship. “I have a great team and I love all of them. This is a great Series. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and we are going to enjoy it.”
Several others received special recognition, in addition to recognizing the accomplishments of all, for an entire season of passion and dedication.
Jack Ely of Wall, N.J., was officially named the Speedway Illustrated Race of Champions Rookie-of-the-Year.
Point fund contributions come from Hoosier Racing Tire, VP Racing Fuels, the US Army, Colton RV, Presque Isle Downs and Casino and TDH Refrigeration.
Speed51.com representative Daryl Canfield of Binghamton, NY presented the Most Popular Driver Awards. Hossfeld (Modifieds); Mancuso (Super Stocks); Sam Fullone of North Collins, NY (Late Models); Dave Koslowski of Williamsville, NY (Asphalt Sportsman); James Michael Friesen (Dirt 602 Sportsman) and Tyler Catalano of Ontario, NY (Four Cylinder Dash Series) were all named most popular in their respective division.
Special awards were presented to Jody London of Rochester, NY received the second FOAR (Friends of Auto-Racing) Score Fan Club Race of Champions Community Recognition award, with a $250 donation to the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Rochester, NY in London’s name.
Vern Hedderick of Erie, Pa., received a Series dedication award in regard to his consistent yearly participation in the Super Stock Series.
VP Racing Fuels, Sports Insurance Specialists, Speedway Illustrated, Product 9, Concept 1 Fabrication and Rock Auto handed out a variety of awards including product certificates, race tools, discount certificates and gift cards.
For anyone receiving a point fund award, if you opt not to attend the awards banquet, your point fund award will be presented at the first scheduled event for your division in 2019.
Western New York racing announcer and WGR Radio 550 radio show host, Dave Buchanan of Brewerton, NY, performed as the Master of Ceremonies.
The Race of Champions is a sanctioning body presenting Modified and Stock Car racing on asphalt and dirt surfaces throughout the Northeast, with events in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey with primary marketing partners Hoosier Racing Tire, VP Racing Fuels, US Army, Upstate Automotive Group, Waddell Communications, Pilat Graphic Design, Jerico Performance, TDH Refrigeration, Sherwood Racing Wheels, PavedTrackDigest.com and Speed51.com. The 69th annual Race of Champions weekend will take place in 2019 at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, Pennsylvania and is the second longest consecutive auto-racing event in North America, second only to the Indianapolis 500.
