Apfelbeck and Clover Claim Double Features

It isn’t too often that a driver goes to the track knowing that they will be running double features, but this was the case on Saturday night (6/30) at Beaver Dam Raceway. Due to a tragic accident the week prior, the legends feature was pushed back a week to the 30th. For some drivers, the double features added to an already busy weekend of racing. Drivers like Cody Apfelbeck made the long trek to Iowa to race in multiple “Racing for a Cause” events, including the largest dirt legends purse ever with a $5,100 to win show on Friday night. Most drivers decided to come back to Beaver Dam for the night instead of racing a third night in Iowa. Cody Apfelbeck took a little longer than the others to decide this though. The team ran their heat race in Iowa before deciding to load up and head to Beaver Dam. Apfelbeck made it to the track with just minutes to spare before the legends make-up feature rolled out onto the track for the first event of the evening.
Being the first event of the night, the track was still in heat race condition. The top seemed to be the preferred line for many as the bottom was still a little sloppy. Cody Apfelbeck and Justin Pearson both found ways to make the bottom groove work well enough to make their way through the field and find themselves running first and second. Other drivers battled throughout the field but none were able to catch Pearson and Apfelbeck who battled to the end, with Apfelbeck taking home the win.
Heat races were ran just a handful of races later, so drivers had very little time to get their cars ready. The heats provided some great racing as Frankie Hoch picked up another heat win. Eric Blumer picked up his first career heat race win. Justin Pearson also added another heat race win to his collection.
In the second feature the track had dried out which put the drivers skills to the test. Ryan Kuehn led the first few circuits arounds until a caution allowed Ryan Mech to take the lead. Mech led for a few laps but it was evident that Kim Clover and Justin Pearson had much faster cars. One mistake from Mech allowed Clover and Pearson by. Another caution came out to bunch up the field. With Pearson out front, Clover elected to take the inside on the restart. Pearson led the next few circuits until trouble struck as rear end troubles took the 80 team out of competition. Mech was running third at the time but fell back to 5th when Pearson broke and Bille Lehmann, Mike Mueller, and Cody Apfelbeck all snuck by. Apfelbeck was able to make his way up to second place but was not able to track down Clover in time. Clover took home the win, Apfelbeck in second, Bille Lehmann finished third, and Mike Mueller and Ryan Mech finished out the top 5.
This week the legends will be at Beaver Dam Raceway on Saturday for fan appreciation night, and on Sunday they will be at Angell Park Speedway for the Pepsi Midget Nationals.
