Inside Line Promotions – EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada (Aug. 21, 2018) – Cody Masse managed to qualify for both main events during the 63rd annual Jim Albert Memorial Gold Cup last weekend at Castrol Raceway despite battling engine problems throughout the NSA Series doubleheader.

“It was a disappointing weekend since we had to retire the car early from both features,” he said. “But we were 16th out of 28 cars at the end so that wasn’t horrible for what we dealt with.”

Masse began the two-day event on Friday by qualifying 16th quickest and posting a third-place finish in his heat race, slotting him 16th in the starting field for the A Main. However, rain began falling prior to the evening’s main event, postponing it to Saturday.

“We ran Friday’s A Main on Saturday and dodged a big wreck on the first lap, which eliminated some of the cars in front of us,” he said. “We restarted 11th and ran there for most of the race. We had a pretty good car, but it started overheating and I pulled in with about 10 laps to go for our second DNF of the season. It was unfortunate because we were in a good position to get some pretty good points due to the crash, but the good news was our engine wasn’t hurt.”

Saturday’s heat races began after the make-up feature for Friday was completed. Masse finished seventh after starting sixth in the heat.

“We didn’t have a very good heat race,” he said. “That put us in the B Main for the second time this year. We thought we had our overheating issues solved. We started third in the B Main and led the first eight laps before finishing third and qualifying for the A Main.”

Masse rolled off in the 19th starting spot for the Gold Cup’s main event.

“We were able to dodge an early wreck again a few laps into the feature,” he said. “We were running 14th or 15th when the motor overheated again. I pulled in with about seven laps to go and we were officially scored 16th. Our engine has about 35 shows on it and we’re just trying to take care of it the remainder of the year. We’re happy it’s still running, but we may have to back down the RPMs on it.”

Masse will take this weekend off before tackling the 24th annual Montana Round Up at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont., Aug. 31 – Sept. 2.

“We’re looking forward to a big weekend of racing at Great Falls,” he said. “It’s a cool event at a fun track with a lot of strong competition again.”
