Diehls Get their Kicks on Route 66: New Mexico Nationals Recap
This weekend was the trip of a lifetime that also included a pretty big race! The weekend was marked by cooler than normal temperatures, really high winds, drifting sand, and even some rain. However, USAC ran a great show and we got home just in time for school on Tuesday!
The highlight of the weekend was Formula Mod, in which Jack made a huge run at the end of the feature race to finish third, almost taking second on the last lap. During the last 10 laps, it was clear he was the fastest car on the track, and it was fun to watch! Congratulations to Gunnar Pio on the win.
In Senior Animal, Jack was consistently one of the top cars all weekend. He won his heat race by a significant margin, and started P4 in the feature. After accidents sent him to the back twice (once while battling for third), he fought his way up to a 5th place finish. He passed 11 lead lap cars in his two charges through the field. Congratulations to Caleb Johnson on the win.
In our Light World Formula, we battled weather and handling, but transferred from the B to the A, riding shotgun on the field. He was able to finish to 7th place in a loaded feature, but a fuel line issue kept him from advancing any higher. Congratulations to Hayden Wise on her victory.
Both of our Senior Honda cars uncharacteristically struggled this weekend. In hindsight, there were a few things we could have done to make Jack and Lily faster, but you don’t get second chances at a national race.
We are thankful to all who made this weekend possible. We are now on to the Waterford Midwest Thunder!
