Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 12, 2017) – Derek Hagar’s busy night of pulling double duty went well last Saturday at I-30 Speedway, where he charged from a B Main to a top five in the sprint car A Main and he posted a season-best midget result.

“That was tough to go back and forth between the sprint car and midget,” he said. “That’s only our third time in the midget this year. It’s one of those things you have to be in the seat to get comfortable. It took me a majority of the night to get comfortable with the car.”

Hagar advanced from fourth to second place during the POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget Series heat race. That lined him up third for the main event.

“We ran second for a couple of laps,” he said. “We fell back to third. I got passed again about halfway. Then we had a caution with four laps to go. My left rear was going flat and I couldn’t drive the car as hard as I wanted to. I got passed at the end and finished sixth. It was a good night in the midget.”

Hagar’s sixth-place finish was his best result of the season in the midget and his top finish in several years.

Hagar also piloted his sprint car that night during the ASCS Red River Region and ASCS Mid-South Region event at the quarter-mile oval.

Late contact in a heat race relegated him to a fifth-place finish, which sent him into the B Main. Hagar advanced from fourth to win the consolation race and transfer into the 15th starting position for the A Main.

“We fell back early,” he said. “Some drivers up front didn’t know where they wanted to go and it jumbled everything up. I wasn’t going to stick my nose where it didn’t need to be. I think if we started further up front we’d have had a better shot.

“You had to wait. They started throwing moisture to the middle. They were stacking up on the bottom so I was able to make up ground through the middle. We had a restart with six or seven laps to go. I got by (Johnny) Herrera and then there were a couple racing side by side. I went through the middle and got by both of them. We had a late restart and I drove around a couple of cars to end with a fourth-place finish.”

Hagar’s fourth-place result was his 25th top five of the season.

He will take this weekend off before returning to action Sept. 21-23 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the 7th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
