Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (July 11, 2016) – Chase Johnson fought an uphill battle throughout the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event last Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway.

“We had our backup motor in the car as our primary motor is in rotation to being freshened,” he said. “We knew we’d struggle a little bit in qualifying. The pill we pulled didn’t help at all as we went out second or third to last.”

Johnson qualified 12th quickest in the Shawn and Cyndi Thomas owned sprint car, which lined him up on the outside of the third row for a heat race.

“We showed some speed and passed a couple of cars in the heat, but unless we won that race it didn’t really matter where we moved up to,” he said.

Johnson placed fourth in the heat race and he lined up on the outside of the sixth row for the main event.

“In the main we worked our way toward the front,” he said. “We made it up to seventh and then around Lap 18 me and another car got together on the front straightaway. It ended up hurting the left rear tire and caused it to go flat. The left rear shock was also broken. The team got a new left rear wheel on so we were able to push back out, but they didn’t have time to change the shock, too. I limped it around and unfortunately there wasn’t another yellow before we went down a lap. I ended up pulling off early to save the car.”

Johnson capped the night with a 15th-place finish.

He will return to action this Saturday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., for the Howard Kaeding Classic with the King of the West.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “The Howard Kaeding Classic is a special race. We’ve been there quite a bit this year. That should definitely help us. We’ll have the big motor back in. I feel really confident, especially after our third-place run there the last time.”

Johnson earned his first career podium with the King of the West during his most recent race at Ocean Speedway.
