Leary, Farney, Bayston Lead "Rookie" Standings
Indiana drivers C.J. Leary of Greenfield, Aaron Farney of Brookston, and Spencer Bayston of Lebanon are the current leaders in their respective races for the 2015 USAC National “Rookie of the Year” awards to be distributed at USAC’s National Awards Banquet in downtown Indianapolis December 11.
Leary faces competition from Austin Nemire and Justin Grant for the Silver Crown honors entering the “Salt City 78” series finale October 10 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Leary scored a sensational second-place finish in the “Sumar Classic” at Terre Haute, Ind. in July and added “top-10” finishes on the pavement at Indianapolis, and on the dirt at Belleville, Kans., Springfield, Ill. and Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
Leary ranks sixth in the standings, trailed closely by rookie hopefuls Austin Nemire and Justin Grant. Nemire, ninth in the points, was fifth at Iowa Speedway in June, seventh at Toledo, Ohio and had a pair of 10ths at Indianapolis on the pavement. Grant, 10th in the latest points, had a third at Belleville, a fourth at DuQuoin, Ill., a fifth in the Hoosier Hundred and sixths at Terre Haute and at Eldora Speedway.
Farney is 11th in the AMSOIL National Sprint Car points entering Saturday’s “Fall Nationals” at Lawrenceburg, Ind. on the strength of a victory during Indiana Sprint Week at Terre Haute and six other “top-10s.” Carson Short and Max McGhee are his closest pursuers in the points, ranking 19th and 20th respectively.
Bayston appears to be the hands-down Honda National Midget candidate, fifth in the standings after recording 11 “top-10” finishes. He was third at Gas City and had fourths at Beloit, Kans. and during the Pennsylvania swing at Path Valley Speedway Park.
