Rene Hughes Memorial
In his own words, Jori Hughes explains what the second annual Rene Tribute Event will
look like. Please support this event however you can.
“Good and bad news with the 2nd annual Rene Hughes Tribute Race. Unfortunately,
with the restrictions and the Hibbing Raceway schedule still up in the air we weren’t able
to get the June 27th date at Hibbing Raceway locked in. We are sure in for a cool venue
change though as we will be having the 2nd annual Rene Hughes Tribute Race on
August 29th at the famed Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisconsin. It will be
part of the Traditional Sprint Car Challenge weekend and we are excited to have it
there. Cedar Lake Speedway was one of my Dad’s favorite tracks and it will be a great
weekend to host the race. We are thankful to the Hibbing Raceway for allowing us to
hold the race there last season and for the date we had planned to have it this season.
Also a big thank you to Cedar Lake Speedway, the Upper Midwest Sprint Car Series,
and the Northern Renegades for helping put together this event to honor my Dad.
As we did last season, we will be accepting donations to boost the traditional purse. But
something cool for this year and hopefully continuing into the future is that 50% of the
money raised to boost the purse will be donated to the American Cancer Society Hope
Lodge in Minneapolis. So, whether we raise $20 or $2000 half will be donated to the
Hope Lodge. The Hope Lodge gives patients and their caretakers a free place to stay
while receiving cancer treatment. They make sure you have a comfortable place to stay
without having to worry about lodging or hotels and allow you to focus on getting better.
My Dad spent quite a bit of time there during his treatments and Caley Emerson from
the Northern Renegades knows, first hand, what a great asset the Hope Lodge is also.
It is a win win situation as we are not only giving back to the teams supporting the event
but also to a great cause. If you are interested in donating you can email me
