Bowers gets First Victory of 2018 at the Big O

Ogilvie, MN, June 9, 2018
The POWRi Lucas Oil UMSS series outran the weather around Minnesota to race at the Big O in Ogilvie, MN in front of a grand crowd this Saturday night.
The Traditional Sprints with a stout twenty-four car field would run three caution-free PIRTK Fluid Transfer Solutions heat races. Winners of the heat races were the N1 of Ty Sampair, the 7 of Scott Brandt, and the 16 of Anna Hippe.
The feature would start 23 of the 24 cars on-hand with Brad Peterson, Anna Hippe and Cam Schafer who started 5th, 6th and 7th respectively quickly finding the high groove and making their move to the front. Cam Schafer had just bested the race leader Scott Brandt coming off turn two when the red flag flew on lap 8 for the N1 of Ty Sampair who was sunny side down after trying to avoid an on track incident between the 22 of Pellersels and the 3K of Kerzman resetting the field. At the restart Cam would make quick work of getting past Brandt and opening up a sizable lead. There was plenty of good racing throughout the field with the 69s of Jon Lewerer coming from 15th to 6th and Anna Hippe who started 6th racing up to 2nd not quite having enough to best Schafer. Schafer would hang on to take the checkers after the one other quick caution when the 2J was caught up in the spin cycle and park his #14 Sprinter in the Rock Auto victory lane. This is Schafer’s 3rd feature win in a row and 4th of the season. Anna Hippe came in second, Scott Brandt third, Brad Peterson fourth (DQ’d for passing tech and returning to his hauler) and Mike Mueller rounding out the top 5.
The Winged 360 Sprinters brought nine cars to the Big O and ran back to back heat races as well as the Wing of the Hill race for feature starting positions. Winners of the heat races were Jamey Ogston in heat 1 and Chase Viebrock in heat 2. The Wing of the Hill winner was Ryan Bowers.
The 20 lap feature would have Wing of the Hill winner Ryan Bowers starting on the pole and jumping to an early lead. Eric Lutz in the 6 and Jamie Ogston made quick work of getting by McVitty on the top side in his 7m machine for 2nd and 3rd with Viebrock in the 50 close behind. Bowers would lead all 20 laps and take his victory of 2018 and parked it in Rock Auto Victory Lane followed by the 6 of Eric Lutz, the 03 of Jamey Ogston, the 50 of Chase Viebrock and the 7 of Harry Hanson rounding out the top 5.
The UMSS Traditional Sprints begin their northern tour 6/21 in Grand Rapids and the UMSS Winged Sprints are up next 6/29 at Granite City and 6/30 at Cedar Lake Speedway
