Charlie McCann Passes Away
(Photos by Bill Oldroyd)
July 9, 2021 - With great sadness we share the news that former SOS racer Charlie McCann passed away earlier this week. Charlie began racing at the age of 17 and frequently used that number during his lengthy career. A well-known asphalt Supermodified racer, the first part of Charlie’s career began in the 1950’s and lasted until he retired in the 70’s.
Charlie was affectionately known to announcers and fans as “Thee Charles McCann at many local speedways, and he never lost his love for racing following his first retirement. He decided to get back in the driver’s seat with the Southern Ontario Sprints in the late 90’s and, although he was in his 60’s by that time, Charlie hadn’t lost his edge and quickly adapted to dirt racing. The second chapter of his career lasted seven seasons, and he recorded six top five finishes in SOS competition during that time. Following his second retirement from driving Charlie could still be found in the pits most weekends, often with his trademark cigar.
We are proud to call Charlie our competitor, member, and friend, and offer our condolences to the family and friends of Charlie McCann, one of the most colourful characters in racing.
