Bacon Guns for USAC Sprint Car Crown on Saturday – Make First Pavement Silver Crown Start Sunday

Lonnie Wheatley, WINCHESTER, Ind. (October 2, 2020) – It has been a battle from the outset.

But after posting a pair of podium finishes in last weekend’s USAC Sprint Car portion of the Double-Double at Gas City and Kokomo, Bacon and the Fatheadz Eyewear No. 69 Sprint Car team carry a 30-point advantage into Saturday night’s season finale at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

“That’s ten positions, so a solid night can seal it,” Bacon says. “But a lot can happen, we definitely still have some work to do.”

After trying to put the finishing touches on a third USAC National Sprint Car championship on Saturday, Bacon will experience a “first” on Sunday as he makes his maiden pavement voyage in USAC Silver Crown action aboard the Doran Racing No. 77 at Toledo Speedway’s Rollie Beale Classic.

Bacon pulled double-duty during last weekend’s USAC Double-Double, making his initial starts aboard the Hayward Motorsports Oilfire No. 19 Midget along with his Sprint Car action in the familiar Hoffman No. 69.

With a potential Sprint Car crown on the line, Bacon started the weekend in strong fashion with the quickest overall time on Friday at Gas City and then raced to a third-place finish in the feature event. Bacon then led much of the way in Saturday’s Kokomo feature before settling for runner-up honors at the stripe.

“I felt we had a better car,” Bacon readily admitted after leading 18 of 30 Kokomo laps. “I got stuck out in the lead as kind of a sitting duck. I contemplated going to the bottom, but it’s kind of hard to leave what you’re doing. We actually got the lead back and lapped traffic just kind of clogged the hole and (Courtney) was able to keep the lead. I’m disappointed to run second again but there’s obviously a bright side with us gaining a lot of points for the championship.”

In the USAC Midget portion of the Double-Double, “The Macho Man” rallied from 22nd to 11th in Friday’s main event at Gas City and then finished out the weekend with a strong sixth-place run on Saturday at Kokomo Speedway.

“It was a challenge, the Hayward Motorsports team was running two cars and I was racing in two cars, so all that back and forth makes it difficult,” Bacon evaluates. “But I was really happy with the progress that we made over the weekend, I feel like we’ll be in a good position to do well at the Leffler and Haubstadt next weekend.”

This weekend can be one for the record books though with a potential third USAC Sprint Car title on the line along with a Silver Crown pavement debut.
