Pokorski Motorsports nets top-10 at Plymouth

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 27, 2019 – Paul Pokorski and the Pokorski Motorsports team added to their 2019 top-10 tally with a solid A-main performance at in Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car action at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. on Friday, Aug. 23.

Pokorski was among 34 entries in the 360 Sprint Car portion of a special Friday night Plymouth Dirt Track Racing program. After lining up on the outside of the front row in the second PDTR 360 Sprint Car heat race, Pokorski settled into the second spot behind polesitter Ben Schmidt on the opening lap.

By lap 4, Schmidt had built up a full straightaway lead over Pokorski as the 27th-year West Bend driver went on to post a runner-up finish to earn a spot in the evening’s 360 Sprint Car A main.

After the heat race passing points inversion roll, Pokorski began the 25-lap A main from the ninth starting position. On lap 3, Pokorski used a big run down the backstretch to streak past both Josh Teunissen and Anthony Knierim to seize seventh in the running order in turn three.

Following the lone caution of the race for Jim Melis’ stalled machine in turn two on lap 11, Pokorski fell back a spot to eighth on lap 13. Six laps later, Pokorski used the outside groove to power around Tony Wondra to regain the seventh spot, which he held for the final six laps to earn his 12th top-10 A-main finish of the 2019 campaign in a race won by Danny Schlafer.

“I was very happy with Friday night at Plymouth,” Pokorski said. “The car ran well, I did my job reasonably well and we ended up with a decent result. I want to thank ‘Sleeveless’ Bob Schneider for the bonus money that he paid to the sixth- and seventh-place finishers in honor of the memory of longtime Plymouth track photographer Dave Drews.”

On Saturday, Aug. 24, Pokorski joined the Midwest Sprint Car Association for the MSA’s first appearance at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wis. since 2014.

The MSA utilized a Grand Prix-style group qualifying system for the event, which saw Pokorski turn in the 16th fastest time in the 31-car field with a lap of 13.835 seconds on the high-banked third-mile clay oval.

Pokorski, who was the winner of the previous MSA A main held at Beaver Dam Racway on April 26, 2014, started third in the fourth MSA 10-lap heat race and moved to second after passing Scott Conger in turn three on lap 4. Four laps later, Lance Fassbender tracked Pokorski down and slipped past to drop the 2014 MSA Masters Series champion to third. Pokorski went on to secure a third-place finish and a transfer spot to the 25-lap A main.

After starting 12th in the A main, Pokorski struggled to find the right balance on the ultra-fast and tricky track surface. However, he managed to hold his position and benefit from a few mechanical-related retirements near the front of the field in the latter stages of the race to come home with an 11th-place finish in a race won by Ben Schmidt.

“On Saturday night at Beaver Dam, we struggled a little bit,” Pokorski said. “The track had a lot more bite in it than I anticipated it would have going into the feature. The car was just too tight and we were off on gear a little bit too. It wasn't a terrible night and we'll put it behind us and move on to next week. Overall for the MSA, it was a great weekend of racing with really good car counts both nights.”

On Sunday, Aug. 25, Pokorski was one of many friends and supporters from the racing and bluegrass music community to pay tribute to longtime Pokorski Motorsports and MSA supporter Dave “Hagar” Nelson, who passed away on July 3, during a Celebration of Life event in Milwaukee.

“We wrapped up the weekend by attending a Celebration of Life event for our good friend and supporter of local racing, Dave “Hagar” Nelson, on Sunday afternoon,” Pokorski said. “It was amazing to see the positive impact he had on so many people's lives. He is truly missed.”

The Pokorski Motorsports team is now slated to complete in a Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car event in conjunction with the Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series during the Sheboygan County Fair in Plymouth, Wis. on Saturday, Aug. 31. Engine warm ups are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with IRA qualifying and racing to follow.
