Mallett Picks Up Pair of Top Fives During USCS Competition

Inside Line Promotions – MILTON, Fla. (Oct. 23, 2018) – Jordon Mallett continued his championship chase with the USCS Series last weekend, earning two more top-five finishes as he closes in on his second consecutive title with the Southeast-based series.
Mallett began the action last Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, Miss., by charging from the sixth starting spot to finish second in heat race competition, which set him up with a front row starting position in the main event.
“The car was good right out of the trailer and we didn’t have to change much on it,” he said. “We were pretty satisfied in hot laps and left it where it was for the heat race. The car was pretty good in the heat race as well.”
Mallett started on the outside of the front row in the 30-lap main event at the quarter-mile bullring and he finished in that same position to earn his 28th top-five finish of the season.
“I’ve actually never really been satisfied with the car at Hattiesburg, but we were pleasantly pleased with it,” he noted. “Hindsight is 20/20, but we wish we would have made a couple of more changes to give the car a little more drive. We were better than the leader in traffic and could maneuver a little better and had a little more freedom. Once we got clear track, he could just pull away from us. We should have just tuned the car a little bit different. We know what we should have done different and we’ll take that on to the next one.”
The team ventured to Southern Raceway the following night. Mallett opened the competition with a fifth-place showing the dash. He followed that up by working his way from sixth to third in a heat race.
“It rained off and on, and that track is very sandy so it’s like racing on the beach,” he said. “It was wet sand and in our eyes. We were terrible in hot laps and were not pleased with anything the car was doing and didn’t have near the speed we should have had out of the box. We changed a few things for the dash and still didn’t have any speed in the car. We made some significant changes for the heat race and it was tremendously better. We weren’t any slower than the leader, we just needed the track position.”
Mallett started on the outside of the front row in the main event and ran among the top three until the final couple of corners of the race. While running third, he tried a slide job for second and got to second on the backstretch, but it didn’t stick in turns three and four as he ended up finishing fourth.
“We definitely had a second-place car,” he said. “I rode around in third for most of the race and could never get enough of a run to pass second. The track was kind of narrow and around the top this time. I gambled for second and fell to fourth and finished fourth. I wasn’t going to leave there without taking a shot and it just played in their favor this time. We were satisfied. We made leaps and bounds and were very happy with the car in the feature. It was another one of those where the cards just didn’t fall in the right favor for us.”
Mallett returns to Riverside International Speedway in his home state of Arkansas this weekend for the completion of the Flip Flop 54. Preliminary events were completed on Oct. 10 and this Saturday the pair of feature races will be contested.
“We are locked in the show and actually starting on the front row of the first feature,” he said. “We are eager to see how the weekend goes. I always enjoy getting to race at West Memphis.”
