Inside Line Promotions – COLCORD, Okla. (April 9, 2024) – Dominic Scelzi officially passed a combined 14 cars during a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader last weekend.

Scelzi gained seven positions – tied for the fifth most – before finishing 16th on Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway and he hustled forward another seven positions – the second most – on Saturday at Arrowhead Speedway, where he placed 12th.

“Qualifying continues to be the thing that buries us,” he said. “If we could just start in the first six rows I think we could race our way into the top five. Honestly, car-wise I don’t think we’ve been better. If we could get ourselves to qualify better and start further forward I feel confident about running up front.”

Scelzi opened Friday’s Wildcat Showdown at the high-banked dirt oval near Osborn, Mo., by qualifying 13th quickest in his group. He gained a spot in a heat race to end sixth and picked up a position for a third-place showing in the Last Chance Showdown to garner a transfer into the back of the A Main. The night concluded with Scelzi maneuvering forward more than a half-dozen positions.

“For whatever reason I had to drive it different on the gas pedal because I couldn’t get the RPMs,” he said. “When I was in the grip I was bogging down. It’d almost make me tight because I couldn’t get the tires spinning. I felt like I had a Knoxville gear in it. We found a couple of things on Saturday that helped.”

Scelzi timed in 23rd overall on Saturday to kick off the Jason Johnson Classic. He advanced from sixth to fifth place in a heat race before the solid performance in the main event on a track that took rubber, which made passing at a premium as the race went on.

“In the main event if it doesn’t lay rubber or we got a few more laps I think we’re running into the top 10,” he said. “We were really, really good. Before it laid rubber I could pound the fence, run the bottom or drive through the middle. Once the rubber came in we still could get by guys. I felt a lot better in the car.”

A change of scenery will take place this week when Scelzi will make his first start of the season in his home state of California on Saturday when he’ll drive a car for Morrie Williams Motorsports during the Peter Murphy Classic at Kings Speedway in Hanford.
