Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 23, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi was a man on a mission last Friday during the opening round of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series doubleheader at Thunderbowl Raceway.

Scelzi opened the two-day event on Friday by qualifying 20th quickest in his Roth Motorsports supported, family owned ride.

“I didn’t put down the best lap in qualifying, but we still ended up 20th,” he said. “On the first lap in the heat race a guy in front of me spun and it knocked the jacob’s ladder out. We were still able to run sixth and almost had a transfer so we felt pretty good.”

Scelzi’s sixth-place result in the heat race missed a lock-in spot to the main event by only one position. That sent him to the Last Chance Showdown, in which a runner-up result transferred Scelzi into the back of the main event.

“We methodically made our way through and were able to come away with a 12th-place finish,” he said. “The track was hooked up and rough and hard to pass so it was good to make that many passes. We had a great race car. I could make the top, bottom and middle work. If guys were running the bottom I could pass on the top and if they were on the top I could pass through the middle.”

Scelzi charged from 22nd to the 12th-place result, which was the second-most cars any driver passed and it marked his best-ever finish with the World of Outlaws at Thunderbowl Raceway. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/n29Nf6B2vTo.

The event concluded on Saturday when Scelzi timed in 19th quickest during qualifying before he advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race. That started him on the inside of the eighth row for the main event.

“We got up to 14th and there was a caution,” he said. “Being on the outside I could run the middle for a couple of laps and picked up some positions. I quickly got to 10th and we had a yellow flag. The leader chose the outside lane so I had to go to the inside. I went into turn one and hit a hole on the bottom and lost two or three spots. Then I got to racing with a guy and we made contact. It was a racing deal and I ended up with a folded front end.”

Scelzi was in contention for a top 10 before the incident ended his night early. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/bCS8O7NBbH0.

He is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., for the FVP Western Spring Shootout with the World of Outlaws. He has won a pair of King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series races at the track, including his first ever in 2013.
