Inside Line Promotions – SPENCER, Iowa (Sept. 16, 2016) – Donny Schatz took advantage of a green-white-checkered finish to steal the Arnold Motor Supply Shootout on Friday at Clay County Fair Speedway.

The victory was his first career with the National Sprint League and his 22nd of the season with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. He also became the 10th different NSL feature winner in 22 main events this season.

“There was no game plan,” Schatz said during a Victory Lane interview. “The nine car (of Daryn Pittman) was a lot better than we were. He was going out to (turn) one and coming across. I figured if I could get to the bottom maybe he’d slip up. I got there before he could get down. Without the restart I definitely wouldn’t have won that.”

Pittman led the first 28 laps of the 30-lap main event before the second and final caution of the race occurred to set up the two-lap dash to the finish.

“At one point you couldn’t even see him anymore,” Schatz said of Pittman. “When your car is that good you hate to see these yellows. Some days it bites you and some days it doesn’t.”

The late caution worked in the favor of Schatz, who pounced on Pittman in turns one and two on the restart. The duo raced side by side down the backstretch before Schatz took the lead for good heading to the white flag. Pittman made one last run at Schatz on the final lap, but came up just short and settled for the runner-up position.

“I didn’t get it done,” he said. “We had a dominant car and just didn’t finish the job. That one is pretty hard to swallow. We had a really good car. I thought we were getting through traffic well.”

Brad Sweet capitalized on the late-race restart to round out the podium.

“It was a good race there,” he said. “Those two had a good battle the last two laps. We were able to get a pretty good restart and got into third there. I just struggled in (turns) one and two. We were pretty good in (turns) three and four on the top there.”

Logan Schuchart finished fourth with Shane Stewart fifth.

Jason Johnson kicked off the night by setting quick time during qualifying before he, Schatz, Stewart and Sweet each won a heat race. Pittman claimed the dash and Jacob Allen won the B Main.

Danny Lasoski increased his lead in the National Sprint League championship standings after a sixth-place result. He now leads Craig Dollansky, who brought out the first caution on Lap 9 before finishing last, by 376 points with only three points-paying races remaining this season.

The National Sprint League wraps up this weekend on Saturday at U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Mo., for the FVP Missouri High-Banked Nationals. The event is co-sanctioned with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
