Inside Line Promotions – MINOT, N.D. (Aug. 29, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi earned his third top 10 of the season with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series on Sunday during his debut at Nodak Speedway.
Scelzi opened the event by qualifying 13th quickest before he finished where he started – fifth – in a heat race. That locked him into the 13th starting position for the main event.
“The car was really strong,” he said. “It was just really hard to pass. The top was good and the bottom was good. We had to race as hard as I could to run 12th. With Shane Stewart and Jason Sides crashing it put me to 10th. On a restart I jumped to seventh and off turn four I was back to 10th. I passed everyone through turns one and two and coming out of turn four everyone passed me back. I’m thrilled with a top 10 though.”
Scelzi ended with a 10th-place result, which marked his 13th total top 10 of the season. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/-liDOT3kQ5w.
It was also a strong end to Scelzi’s debut in North Dakota, where he opened last weekend on Friday by qualifying 11th quickest in his group at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.
“We went out really late in qualifying and I think that hurt us,” he said. “There was only one non-Outlaw that out-qualified us.”
Scelzi then placed sixth in a heat race after a torrid battle for a lock-in position. That relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown, which he finished third in to transfer into the A Main.
“We were right there in the heat race,” he said. “We could have run fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh. Then we were really good in the Last Chance Showdown. I just searched around to figure out where I felt best at.
“I pretty much ran the bottom all 40 laps in the main event. We were up to 13th at one point, but I made a mistake and Greg Wilson and Jacob Allen got back by. We weren’t in the top 10, but if we would have qualified better I think we had a car capable of running in the top 10. We’ve done a few things different lately to make me more comfortable in the car and we’re making progress. I think that showed last weekend.”
Scelzi rallied from 23rd to a 15th-place result. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/LY9jHvs6HC0.
He will continue with the World of Outlaws this weekend to Washington State, where there are races on Friday and Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger and Monday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.
