No Stopping Schatz in Boothill Showdown Finale

After finishing second in Friday night’s “Boothill Showdown” opener, Donny Schatz improved one position to top Saturday night’s 30-lap World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature atop the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval.

The North Dakota native gunned into the lead at the outset and led all the way aboard the Tony Stewart Racing / Bad Boy Buggies No. 15 for his 19th overall series win of the season and third career DCRP triumph.

“It feels good to get back in victory lane,” Schatz said after posting the $10,000 triumph. “It definitely helped to start up front tonight, it would have been tough to come from very far back.”

While Schatz enjoyed World of Outlaws laurels, Alan Brewster captured his first career “A” Main win by topping the IMCA Sport Modified feature and Canadian Wally Butler bested the Colorado Lightning Sprint feature.

After Joey Saldana got into the turn four wall on the initial start of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature, Schatz outgunned pole starter and Friday night winner Jason Sides at the drop of the green flag for the early lead.

Schatz zipped around the track on the preferred high line with Sides, Paul McMahan, Kerry Madsen and Jason Johnson in tow over the first half of the race until a caution flew after 16 laps when Logan Schuchart came to a stop in turn four.

Schatz elected the top side on the double-file restart and immediately raced back out front with McMahan and Jason Johnson taking advantage of the high line as well to shuffle Sides back to fourth.

McMahan tried to reel in Schatz as traffic once again came into play in the final handful of circuits, but Schatz successfully navigated by a couple of cars to put the win away.

McMahan settled for runner-up honors in the CJB Motorsports No. 51 with Johnson third in the Priority Aviation No. 41. Sides settled for fourth after holding down second for the first half of the race with Kerry Madsen rounding out the top five.

Daryn Pittman climbed a handful of positions to sixth with fellow Oklahoma native Shane Stewart in seventh. Brad Sweet and David Gravel were next across the stripe in eighth and ninth, respectively, with Saldana bouncing back from his opening lap incident to complete the top ten.

Saldana set the night’s quick time of 12.480 seconds in qualifying with Stewart, Gravel and Sides winning the heat races.

In IMCA Sport Modified action, Alan Brewster survived a late run by Clay Money to become the eighth different winner in as many events by winning the 20-lap main event.

With Brewster leading from the outset after starting on the pole, Money had to work his way forward from tenth. Money was only up to seventh by the midway point and was fifth on lap 14.

Money began picking off cars in the final rounds, making it up third by the 17th round and then into second by the white-flag lap. His charge to the front fell just short though, with Brewster taking the checkered flag by just a pair of car-lengths.

Eric Pfiefer, Bart Baker and Jeff Kaup chased the lead duo across the stripe.

In Colorado Lightning Sprint action, Manitoba’s Wally Butler raced into the lead on the seventh round and survived some late challenges to take the win in the 30-lapper.

While Butler started on the front row outside, it was pole starter Johnny Boos racing into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Boos stayed out front for just six laps though before Butler took command.

Butler held off the advances of Troy Ullery until Ullery encountered problems with less than ten laps. Rick Hench moved in to challenge as well over the final handful of laps, however Butler was up to the task and preserved the win.

Butler cross the stripe ahead of Hench with Roland Bernard, Boos and Glenn Waterland in the top five.

Action resumes at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday, July 18, with the $1,200-to-win Third Annual Modified Stampede along with IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Hobby Stocks.
