FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2018 TO HONOR JAN “POPS” LEATY WITH RUNNING OF THE “TRIBUTE TO POPS 75” FOR THE RACE OF CHAMPIONS ASPHALT MODIFIED SERIES
On Friday, August 31, 2018 the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Series will make their only appearance of 2018 at the half-mile Spencer Speedway (Williamson, NY) that has a steep history in Modified racing. This season’s appearance will be in honor of the late Jan “Pops” Leaty. Over the last several decades Leaty was a staple at Spencer on any race day in support of his son, Jan, or his grandson, Mike.
Last season the Catalano family ran a lap program for an event in honor of Patsy and Joe Catalano and this season they thought it should be a tribute to “Pops” Leaty.
“We are honored that this will honor and be a tribute to my Grandfather,” stated Mike Leaty. “Many of us that race come from a long line of racers within our families--the Catalano’s, the Lewis family, our family-- they are all synonymous with Spencer Speedway. It is a night that we are truly looking forward to. It’s going to be exciting and it’s always great to have Modifieds racing at Spencer.”
The lap money will be distributed based on draw per lap to those cars running in the top 15 positions.
In addition to the “Tribute to Pops 75” the Race of Champions Four-Cylinder Dash Series will participate in their second event. Travis Montgomery of Ontario, N.Y., captured the first event at the Track @ Hillside Buffalo. The Lancaster type Street Stocks will also join the card for a $500-to-win event.
The gates open at 5 pm at Spencer Speedway for fans with racing to follow at 7 pm.
