DAUM TAKES FIRST NIGHT OF BORDER WAR

BELLEVILLE, IL (July 6, 2018) - Taking control on lap three and holding off a late charge from Terry Babb, Zach Daum picked up his second POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League win of 2018 Friday night at Belle Clair Speedway. The race was the first leg of the Border WAR which continues Saturday night at St. Francois County Raceway.

Warren Johnson took control early as Daum moved quickly into the third spot on the opening lap. Daum continued to move forward and took the race lead with a turn two pass of Johnson using the low line.

The race would stop on lap four as the red flag came out for Ryan Kent, who spun in front of Katlynn Leer, who hit him and caused him to turn over. Kent’s night would be done, but Leer would restart at the tail.

With Daum out front on the restart, Terry Babb and Korey Weyant would work their way past Johnson and into the top three. Daum encountered heavy lapped traffic allowing Babb and Weyant to close in on him at points, but the Pocahontas, IL driver had an answer each time as he worked his way past the lapped cars.

The yellow flag would come out with twenty-six laps complete as Chris Parkinson stopped in between turns three and four. This would give Babb one final shot at Daum as there was only one lapped car in between them on the restart.

Daum got a good start, but Babb quickly disposed of the lapped car and set his sights on Daum. With two laps to go, Babb got a good run and did a slide job to try and get the lead. Daum turned back underneath him to retake the top spot and was able to hold Babb at bay over the final two laps to pick up his fifth career POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League win in his Daum Crop Insurance DRC with Stanton power. Babb was a strong second in his Illini Aerofab XXX with Felker power. Weyant was third in the Weebles Bar and Grill Eagle with Automotive Machine power. Quinton Benson finished fourth in the QBR/GHR Speed Shack Performance-powered MRP. Rounding out the top five was WAR points leader Riley Kreisel in the Smith Motorsports XXX with Engine Connection power. Finishing sixth was Slater Helt as he was followed by Wyatt Burks. JD Black would finish eighth, while early leader Johnson would finish ninth with Anthony Nicholson rounding out the top ten.

The POWRi WAR Sprint Leagues will now move on to the St. Francois County Raceway for night two of the Border WAR on Saturday, July 7.
