Sandusky Speedway 2018 Season Opener

Saturdays early rain and cold weather forced the cancellation of racing at Lorain County Speedway, Barberton Speedway and Midvale Speedway. Sandusky Speedway was able to get their 2018 season opener in the books. Taking home feature wins were Sam Bigham (Modifieds); Justin Hamilton (Street Stocks) and Dylan Watson (Renegade Hobby Stocks).

The chilly temperature seemed better suited for the season ending Cavalcade rather than the season opener but the hardcore racing fans didn't mind as they came out to see whats in store at the Perkins Ave. speedplant for the upcoming season. The twenty lap Modified feature was up first. Sam Bigham took the lead from the outside pole followed by Ryan Cypher, Kenny Sharp and Kevin Jaycox Jr. Defending Modified champion Sharp got past Cypher and began closing in on Bigham. Sharp closed the gap, but Bigham continued to pull away with each lap. At the finish fifteen year old Sam Bigham took the checkered flag ahead of Sharp for his first Modified feature win of the season.

The twenty lap Street Stock feature was up next. Mark Resor led from the pole with Kegan Bartlome and Justin Hamilton in a fierce battle for second. The caution flag was out on lap seven for Matt Wilsons spin. On the restart Resor led with Hamilton, Bartlome, Parker Ennes and John Bennett the top five. Bennett spun two laps later, bringing out the second yellow of the race. On this restart Hamilton took the lead with Ennes second. Hamilton held off Ennes to take the checkered flag.

The twenty lap Renegade Hobby Stock feature closed out the evenings racing program. There were two restarts before one lap was scored. The field started single file with Trent Aslaksen the early leader followed by Rich Gregory, Justin Stanley, Dylan Watson and Austin Stoll the top five running order. Gregory took the lead and held it past the halfway mark. With nine laps to go, Watson took command of the lead. The caution flag waved on lap thirteen for John Collins spin. On the restart Gregory held the lead but would pit on lap sixteen, handing the lead back to Watson who held off Dan Smith for the win.
