Herrera and Swindell Among Racing Stars Coming To Colorado With The American Sprint Car Series

TULSA, Okla. (May 24, 2017) A homecoming so to speak, New Mexico’s Johnny Herrera is among the roster of national touring drivers with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network that will be in competition in Colorado this Memorial Day Weekend.

The first time back to Colorado in 18 years, the series is slated to take on El Paso County Raceway in Calhan on Saturday, May 27 and Phillips County Raceway in in Holyoke on Sunday, May 28. For Herrera, the former World of Outlaw driver, and 1996 Kings Royal Champion, can trace his beginnings to Denver, Colo.

“I was actually born in Denver and spent several years in Colorado when I was a kid before my parents moved back to Albuquerque, N.M.” said Herrera who has been behind the wheel of a Sprint Car for 32 years.

I fact, some of Johnny’s earliest racing memories come back to Colorado with his father, Joe Herrera.

“Back then, he raced Colorado National Speedway in Erie. That would have been in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when it was a dirt track and when I started racing in 1985, he would come with me when I raced at Rocky Mountain Speedway, so my family has actually turned a lot of laps in Colorado over the years.”

In regards to the upcoming events at El Paso County and Phillips County, the Memorial Day Weekend stop is the first time Johnny Herrera will have ever laid eyes on the mile-high ovals. Currently second in National Tour standings, Herrera has chased the Lucas Oil ASCS circuit since 2011.

“I’m really looking forward to it. Even doing this as long as I have, I still really enjoy getting to go to new tracks and face different competition. Our season is going good so far and I feel like we can use these two stops to really make up some ground and challenge for the championship.”

The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network is in its 26th year of sanctioning with events all across the United States. A field of over 25 drivers is expected to be on hand for the Colorado swing, with drivers coming from nearly a dozen states as well as Canada.

Included in that roster is three time World of Outlaw champion, Sammy Swindell. For the wily veteran, racing in Colorado has been a long history with laps in Midgets, Sprint Cars, and even NASCAR Trucks.

“The first time I ever raced in Colorado was 1976 and I won in a Sprint Car and I also raced a Midget which was the first time I’d ever seen one,” commented Swindell who has since gone on to win the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa a record five times. “I raced in Erie about seven times over the years, but it’s been a long time since I’ve raced in Colorado.”

Another racing veteran making his first trip to El Paso and Phillips County, Swindell explained the approach to entering a new track, “We’ll just have to look at the tracks and compare them to other tracks we’ve been to and go from there for our base setup. From there, it’s just watching how the track goes the rest of the night and making changes from there. Just being up in the altitude, it’s going to be different, but I’ve already talked with AG Rains, my car owner, so we’ve got some options there.”

Tickets for both events are currently on sale and can be purchased at the tracks the day of their events. For more information, contact Joe Bellm with BST Promotions at (720) 404-0400 or online at http://www.bstpromotions.com.
