Wing Off and Wing On: Randy Hannagan to race both this weekend
The mark of a true sprint car driver is being able to race both with and without a wing. Randy Hannagan will be accomplishing both this weekend as he steps in the No. 21 USAC Traxas Silver Crown Series car owned by Mark Swanson at the Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 22, before returning to Ed Neumeister’s No. 11N with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions at Millstream Speedway in Ohio on August, 23.
“I am honored I got the call to race this car,” said Hannagan. “I appreciate the opportunity to drive for Mark Swanson and Kent Wolters. It's always great to go do a little different type of racing. The history of Silver Crown cars is legendary in both Illinois and Indiana, so I am happy that I will be able to be a part of this Midwest tradition this weekend.”
The last time “The Hurricane” piloted a Silver Crown car was in 1998 at the Sacramento Mile in his native California. While known for his talents behind the wheel of a winged 410s-sprint car, Hannagan last drove without a wing in a USAC Sprint Car at Eldora Speedway in 2011, where he did make the feature with a very competitive group of cars.
Hannagan will have a USAC legend at his side as Jack Hewitt, the winningest USAC Silver Crown driver of all-time, serves as his team manager. Also, wrenching on the car will be crew chief Kent Wolters and crew member Josh Carpenter.
“This weekend should be a wonderful experience getting to race with and without the wing back-to-back,” Hannagan stated. “I am truly lucky to be able to work with such a great group on both cars. This is what sprint car racing is really about.”
