FVP National Sprint League Notes from Jackson!

FVP National Sprint League Notes from Jackson!

Windom, MN (May 26, 2015) – The Jackson Speedway has never looked better! After weeks of hard work, the renovations were nearing completion and it was time for the $10,000 to win Folkens Bros. Spring Nationals! Unfortunately, the first event of the season at Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota was a wash on Sunday. The FVP National Sprint League heads for the “Show-Me State” and their “March through Missouri” this week. On Thursday they will take on the local contingent at the Saint Francois County Raceway in Farmington, before moving on to the Randolph County Raceway near Moberly Friday, as 410 winged sprint cars hit the high banks there for the first time in 25 years. Following are some notes from Jackson.

A New Track – Drivers and fans alike marveled at the changes at Jackson Speedway. The race surface was widened, and using GPS technology in the grader, a consistent banking will be in place from week to week. The wider track lent to two and three-wide racing all night long. New Musco lighting was installed to brighten things significantly. A two and a half acre holding pond was built, and eventually will fill. Last, but not least, crews installed the entire infield guardrail around the half-mile in less than six hours Friday morning! Crews worked diligently all week as Mother Nature cooperated for once. Even NSL driver Danny Lasoski took a turn or two on the tractor!

North Pole Nightmare – Bill Balog has experienced the glory of victory, but the transplanted Alaskan went through the agony of defeat on Friday. Starting tenth, Bill found the racing groove and charged to the feature lead on lap nine. After building a sizable lead, the caution flew with just two laps to go. Bill didn’t need that. With a tire going down that he would later say had six holes in it, he was a sitting duck in the lead under caution. The sharks pounced from there, and Bill would limp home 14th.

TMAC’s Back – Terry McCarl put himself in position to be the winner on Friday, and that’s just what happened. It was TMAC’s second $10,000 win of the year (he also beat the Outlaws in Vegas). The win came just two weeks after fracturing a vertebrae in his back in the NSL’s stop at Knoxville Raceway. The Altoona, Iowa driver is reporting the most comfortable spot right now is inside the sprint car. Comfort may not have been the word for his back in Victory Lane when adrenaline may have spurred a lift of the NSL’s Natalie Sather!

Packed House – As hot laps started, the line formed at the ticket window was still 80-100 deep. There wasn’t much room left at that point, on a night that everyone wanted to see the new facility and the first appearance of the FVP National Sprint League. Thanks to everyone who came out!

3’s are Wild – We knew if Tim Kaeding got his qualifying down, there would be trouble. He has in the last two events, and has finished second in the feature twice in a row. The driver of the Lunstra Motorsports #3 goes into Farmington not only with the NSL point lead, but also is eligible for the Brown & Miller Racing Solutions “3 for 3 Award” for hitting the podium in three straight races.

Folkens Bros. Trucking and Bargain Barn Tire Center Come up Big – The Folkens Bros. Trucking Spring Nationals are always big on contingencies thanks to a number of sponsors. Every heat winner received $200, and every heat participant received $40. The Dash participants got $100. Brian Brown received a right rear wheel for being high point man after the heats. Right rear tires went to Lynton Jeffrey (last in the B) and Wayne Johnson (last in the C). Tasker Phillips grabbed the last transfer in the B and charged from 24th to 11th in the feature to earn two new front tires. Joe Riedel received a right rear wheel for being the first non-qualifier. Many other giveaways for drivers and fans made it another great night.

Engine Woes – Stu Snyder (Nebraska), Scott Winters (Minnesota) and Kaley Gharst (Illinois) are from different states, but all had the same distinction on Friday. None even got to run a heat race due to engine problems. Josh Schneiderman laid down the third quick time of the night, but after winning the B, made it three laps in the feature before suffering the same fate.

No Track Record – Many anticipated a new track record with the new configuration, but no one could quite get under Sam Hafertepe Jr.’s 2010 record lap of 15.601 seconds...well, except Davey Heskin, but that was in hot laps. Brian Brown’s quick time was close at 15.713 seconds.

Good Sub – Though the series only got one of the three events in that Justin Henderson was subbing for Bryan Clauson in the Matt Wood Racing #17w, he proved an able replacement. Justin was second quick, finished third in his heat and fourth in the main event. The #17w is tied for second in owner points. Clauson had some back luck in the Indy 500 Sunday, but finished second in the feature Sunday night at Kokomo Speedway in Indiana. Justin had fun Saturday as well, winning both the 410 and 360 features at Knoxville in his regular ride, the BDS Motorsports #1.
