After coming off a surprising second-place performance the week before at Sunset Speedway Park for the Spring Challenge, Phillip Johnson of Gresham would capture his first career Northwest Extreme Late Models Series victory at Madras Speedway on Saturday May 31st. It would mark the third race of the season for the series and the only time they would visit the Central Oregon ¼-mile clay oval in 2014.
After a couple of attempts to get the first lap completed Sonny Modaff of Battle Ground, Washington would pace the field early in his Xtreme Motorsports/DCM Trucking/T-Mac Performance #8X MasterSbilt. Unfortunately Modaff would run into some problems and he would have to surrender his lead to the Schram Brothers Excavating/Herz Precision Parts #51 MasterSbilt of Ryan Bothwell from Aurora.
A couple of laps later Bothwell would lose the lead to Phillip Johnson. Johnson would set a rapid pace and managed to blaze the trail for the rest of the field at a rapid rate. The youngster would face heavy lapped traffic late in the race but managed to hold off all challengers in the final circuits including his father Jason. Phillip Johnson would put his Jackhammer Trucking/T&G Trucking/Warpaint Motorsports Graphix #79 Rayburn in victory lane to become the third different winner in as many races with the series this season as well as the fourteenth different series winner since the tour started in 2010.
In the runner-up spot was Gresham’s Jason Johnson in the Jackhammer Trucking/T&G Trucking/Warpaint Motorsports Graphix #76 Rayburn followed by Dave Walters, also of Gresham, in third driving the All-In Property Investments/Warpaint Motorsports Graphix #67 MasterSbilt. The rest of the top five would consist of Brad Martin from Warren in the Reser’s Fine Foods/Wayne Martin Floor Covering/Competitive Edge Sign & Design #99 MasterSbilt entry in fourth while Salem’s Jacob Myers was fifth in the Baxter’s Auto Parts/Blasen & Blasen Lumber Corp./Powell Motors #9 Rayburn.
The Northwest Extreme Late Model Series will be back in action on Saturday June 14th at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon for their Fan Appreciation Night. For the latest news and information on the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series log on to latemodel.nwextremeseries.com.
