With some brief showers in the late morning/early of Friday May 23rd it looked like Willamette Speedway might cancel their event with the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region. But as the day progressed the temperatures warmed up and the skies would clear allowing both the facility and the series to conduct the second race of the Triple Track Challenge with twenty-seven team competing at the 1/3-mile clay oval in Lebanon, Oregon. The racing would produce some very fast speeds with several drivers below the track record in hot laps.

It took two tries to get the first lap of the feature in the books as an opening start caution would bunch up the field. On the second start outside pole sitter Jared Peterson of Stanwood, Washington would shoot the Roger Henderson owned Island Muffler and Brake/Cascade Metal Recycling/Bailey Brothers Performance #7N KPC to the front like a daredevil at a circus. Two red flags would occur including a lap fourteen incident that would end several fast driver’s night after getting caught up in a pileup in turn four including many that were running in the top five at the time.

On the final restart Peterson had the luxury of three lapped cars in between himself and second place which allowed him redevelop a large lead ahead of the competition. In the closing laps Snohomish, Washington’s Seth Bergman was reeling Peterson in but ran out of time. Peterson would earn the win to make it two ASCS-Northwest Region victories in his last three starts with the series and he would become the tenth different series winner at Willamette in fourteen visits when the tour has come to town.

“This thing was on a rail and we’re getting some good momentum going,” commented Jared Peterson in victory lane, “I can’t thank the Henderson family enough, Island Muffler and Brake, and Cascade Recycling. They do a lot and we’re very thankful for them.”

Seth Bergman was a respectable second in the Corridor Electric/Oilfield Equipment & Manufacturing/Young Tool Company/Speedmart Inc. #23 Eagle while third place was Reece Goetz, also from Snohomish, Washington, in the Goetz Brothers Racing/Great Western Transport/Elma Lanes/Speedmart Inc. #9R Eagle. The balance of the top five would consist of the Hedge Carter owned Huddle Automotive Repair/Oregon West RV/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/Hedge Carter Continuous Gutter Service #71 XXX driven by Colin Baker of Cottage Grove in fourth and Salem’s Kyle Miller in fifth piloting the Automotive Sheetmetal/K&S Motorsports/Grant Springer Racing Engines #10 XXX entry.

Heat race winners were Reece Goetz, the Bearing Distributors Inc./Shark Racing Engines/Gee & Gee Racing #5R Schnee of Steve Reeves making the long haul from Valleyview, Alberta, Seattle, Washington’s Tayler Malsam in his Vube.com/Moto Transportation/XYZ Machine Inc./Rudeen Racing #26 KPC, and Seth Bergman. Winning the consolation feature was Garen Linder of Central Point in the Linder Powdercoating/Speedmart Inc./Cook Crane Company/Visual EFX Signs & Graphics #22 KPC.

The ASCS-Northwest Region will head south to Cottage Grove Speedway for Saturday May 24th and Sunday the 25th concluding the Triple Track Challenge. Prices each night are Adults $15.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $13.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $8.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE.
