Pair of top-10 finishes for Christian in USMTS run through Oklahoma and Missouri
Gary Christian took on three straight days of Summit USMTS racing across two states from Thursday through Saturday. He turned in a best finish of fifth in his Hochatown Saloon No. 58x Modified.
On Thursday, the USMTS slate kicked off with the Sooner Showdown at Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, Oklahoma, where 34 Modified teams were seeking the $3,000 victory. Christian qualified with the third-quickest time in his group and won his heat race on the quarter-mile oval. He started the 40-lap feature from the sixth position and finished fifth, rounding out the top five behind Rodney Sanders, Terry Phillips, Jim Chisholm and Tanner Mullens.
For the next two nights, the USMTS schedule shifted to Wheatland, Missouri’s 3/8-mile Lucas Oil Speedway for a pair of $5,000-to-win shows in the 16th annual Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout.
With 33 Modifieds at the track on Friday, Christian was unable to transfer into the feature through his heat race. However, he took fourth in his B-Main, starting him 20th in the 40-lap main event. He climbed eight positions in the race and came home 12th. For his efforts, he earned the night’s FK Rod Ends Hard Charger award.
A 34-car USMTS field was on hand for Saturday’s finale in Wheatland, which again saw Christian fail to transfer out of his heat. After an 11th-place result in his B-Main, he was forced to use an emergency provisional to earn a spot in the feature. He climbed from his 26th starting position to finish eighth in the 50-lapper.
Christian continues to hold the seventh spot in the Summit USMTS National Championship standings as the calendar turns to August.
