Schmuhl Sparks Return to Victory Lane at Angell Park
Sun Prairie, WI (July 14th, 2025) - Hayden Schmuhl stood tall in victory lane once more, picking up his fifth win of the Midwest Legends Dirt Series season and second at Angell Park Speedway in 2025. The sweep meant Schmuhl closed in on the championship lead once more.
The night saw a season high thirty-cars for the inner city track. The final of three trips to Angell Park Speedway, the MLDS packed the pits ready to go to battle.
Fall River Foundry Qualifying was first into the track, with Schmuhl taking home the top spot with a 17.971, the next fastest were Adam Zellmer with a 18.126 and Rob Maule 18.232. The final two spots in the top five were rounded out by Payton Jones and Dallas Ross.
Four N&S Towing Heat Races were up next. Schmuhl showed his speed in heat one, bolting away from the field early and picking up the win. Talyn Neuman and Ryan Sullivan finished in the second and third spots, securing redraw spots further in the night.
The second heat went to Connor Carey, picking up his first heat race win of the season. Zellmer and Cal Swenson both looked fast, but had to settle for second and third.
Ryan Mech held the top spot in the third heat race, holding the lead through the finish. Lilly Fassbender and Faith Zellmer-Schultz fought for the lead but ultimately finished second and third.
The final heat of the night was won by Jones. A strong run for the #21 sealed another heat win for the recent high school graduate. Jeff Schmidt and Scott Wetter came home second and third.
The Fastline Design and Graphics B-Main came out next, with four drivers of the ten getting to make it to the A-Main on the night. Maule picked up the win with Nate Werner, Tim Franz, and Cade Reisdorf all making it into the feature.
After a twelve-car redraw, Neuman and Schmuhl were drawn to the front of the grid. Neuman led the field to the green but was quickly put under pressure by Schmuhl, who wasted no time getting past his Beaver Dam brethren, and jumped to the lead. Schmuhl began his run away from the rest of the field while the field behind began battling. Focus was on Swenson, Zellmer, and Sullivan, who all broke into the top five, and quickly Swenson made his move for second. A caution bunched the field up and made Schmuhl aware of the pressure he was under. Swenson, on the restart, was able to keep the second-place spot and held onto the rear bumper of Schmuhl, waiting for a mistake or an opportunity to pounce. The wouldn’t come before a stoppage in racing as Wetter went for a barrel roll in turn four, rolling an estimated eight or nine times before coming to a rest. The safety team were immediately to his aid and Wetter exited the car under his own power. The following restart was once again not enough for Swenson to make a move before the final caution with three-laps to go. The green flew once more and Swenson, trying with all he had, wasn’t able to get past the #59S. The red flag flew on the final lap as Jones went for a roll, with the #21 being okay after being checked out by medical crews.
With the red flying on the final lap, the race was made official and Hayden Schmuhl was awarded the win, with Swenson finishing second and Zellmer third. Neuman came home fourth and Sullivan fifth.
Schmuhl was again awarded awards from Aero Race Wheels and Rush Racegear for the win. Reisdorf kept the Professional Plating and Rush Racegear Hard Charger award in Sun Prairie, as the native ended eleven-spots up from his last place starting spot. Mark McCallum was drawn as the HMS Motorsports prize by Daxton.
It’s almost no rest for the Midwest Legends Dirt Series, as the Weekday Warrior Series Presented by Spankins Motorsports returns for the second race of the mini-championship. Tuesday July 15th holds the honor of round two at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wisconsin. The series then makes a trip to Gravity Park on Friday the 18th.
