Owens Wins Independence Shootout, Extends HTF Series Points Lead
SENOIA, Ga. (July 5, 2025) — Continuing his recent hot streak, series points leader Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., scored his second Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series victory of the season and extended his lead in the $50,000 championship chase by winning Saturday night’s Independence Shootout at Senoia Raceway.
Owens capitalized on a misstep by leader Joseph Joiner, who jumped the turn-two cushion on lap 42, allowing Owens to take the lead and ultimately claim the $15,000 prize.
“It was a good night,” Owens said. “It’s just a lot of tire games out there, everybody had a little different combination. We’d fire off once and it’d take off and run good and the next lap, it’d be a little skatey and all that stuff. My whole (team), everybody’s did such a good job out here working in this heat. It’s good to come home with a win.”
Joiner, of Milton, Fla., had taken the lead from polesitter Michael Page on lap six and led through lap 41 before his miscue opened the door for Owens. Joiner settled for second with 10th-starting Cory Hedcock of Loudon, Tenn., third. Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., was fourth with Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., rounding out the top five.
Page, who led the opening five circuits, became the center of post-race controversy when he and Hedgecock tangled after the checkered flag. Page was disqualified for intentionally ramming Hedgecock’s car during the cool-down lap, sending the No. 23 machine into the backstretch wall and nearly overturning it. A physical altercation followed, involving both drivers and multiple crew members. Additional penalties will be announced within the week.
Twelve of the 24 starters completed all 50 laps in a feature that was slowed by four cautions and lasted 31 minutes.
Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, Tenn., earned the MD3 Hard Charger of the Race award after advancing from 21st to ninth. Luke Morey of Rutherfordton, N.C., finished 10th to claim Base Racing Fuels Rookie of the Race honors.
Owens drives a Koehler Motorsports Rocket Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and backed by Capital Waste, Ultimate Towing & Recovery, Hommel Construction, Elite Ready Mix, Cheap Cars, Five Star Metal Buildings, Red Line Oil, Midwest Sheet Metal, Capital Electric and Delph Communications.
