Jesse Williamson Wins 2013 Cottage Grove Speedway Modified Nationals; Ray and Cordell Also Victorious

The 2013 Cottage Grove Speedway Modified Nationals would be an exciting one for the final night of the two-day affair. Coburg’s Jesse Williamson would perform a late race pass in the main event that would make the crowd go wild after the lead change. Also on hand for the Saturday August 3rd event was Street Stocks and Hornets.

At the beginning of the fifty-lap main event for the CGS Modified Nationals pole sitter Monte Bischoff, from Medford, would pace the field. Bischoff would stay out in front for some time but never really developed a large lead due to several cautions taking place in the first half of the race. The final caution of the night would take place on lap twenty-four and there on out the race would stay green.

Bischoff was still able to keep in front in his Payroll Specialties Inc./Hoppes Construction/D&S Automotive #F1 Impressive as the laps would click away. There would be a handful of challenges but he managed to keep all contenders in check. As the race had ten laps left Bischoff had built an impressive lead and appeared to be untouchable. But as one lap after another started to click off Jesse Williamson got faster and faster. By the time it was five to go Williamson was in the hunt for the win.

The two drivers managed to make it side by side with just three laps left in the program. Williamson would put his Furniture Options/Housing Options/raceprint.com #W5 Hughes in the middle of the track and drove around the leader Bischoff, who was at the time nestled on the bottom. Williamson also just so happen to make the pass for the top spot just as Bischoff’s left rear tire was going flat. Williamson would bring the crowd to their feet and would win his third career CGS Modified Nationals title.

Finishing in second place would be the Jahnke Heating & Air Conditioning #15J J-Rich of Phoenix’s Jeremy Richey, who started in fifteenth, followed by Jacksonville’s Mark Wauge in the Skinner Autoplex/Hoppes Construction/Meineke Car Care Center #1M Loose Gruff. The balance of the top five would comprise Curtis Towns of Cottage Grove in his SKS Racing/X-Factor Race Cars/Valley Rose Construction #24 X-Factor in fourth and eighteenth starting Brian Poppa, from White City, in fifth driving the Smith Sand Cars/Pacific Crest Auto Sales #65 Jet.

Winners of the two consolation features were Jeremy Richey and the Berry’s Oak Grove Storage/Rapp Racing/garymorgangraphics.com #11X of Tom Berry Jr. from Medford. The victor of the Last Chance Qualifier was Springfield’s Aaron Sheelar in his Producto Saw Systems/C&K Fabricating/West End Performance #45S Kazzbuilt while Monte Bischoff was the scramble winner to give him the pole starting position in the main event.

The Street Stock main event would produce some wonderful action with several lead changes taking place. Myshkin Ferguson of Dickinson, North Dakota would lead the opening laps in his Uncle Pimpey’s Axe Palace/Ferguson Horseshoeing #25¢ Camaro. Ferguson would lose the lead on lap two to young Evan Britton of Cottage Grove. Britton was making his Street Stock debut chauffeuring the Taco Bell of Cottage Grove/D&L Truck Parts/Gilkinson & Sons Inc. #85 Nova for car owner T.J. Langan.

Britton would lead for a few laps until lap five when he would spin out while exiting turn two. The lead would then go to Springfield’s Daniel Ray. Ray would lead the rest of the distance and put his Pure Romance-Leslie Grimes/Brad’s Car Tunes/S.D.M.F. Race Cars #01 Camaro in the winner’s circle for the third time in 2013.
Brett Provost of Grants Pass would finish in the runner-up spot in his #50 Camaro followed by Evan Brtitton in third. Ending the night in fourth and fifth were Don Braaten Painting/Hands On Detail/Mike Van Brunt’s Home & Building Maintenance #84 Regal of Jordan Braaten, from Medford, and the Nathan Anderson Dentistry/Platinum Hair of Creswell #73 Nova of Cottage Grove’s Darin Crooks respectively. Daniel Ray was fast time of the evening at 16.321 second while the trophy dash win would go to Darin Crooks. Heat race winners were Ray and Jordan Braaten.

In the Hornets it was another barn burning main event. Chris Pierce of Cottage Grove would lead early in the Material Fabrication/Meineke Car Care/Virtual Concepts Graphics & Designs #28 but would lose the top spot on lap three to Dexter’s Mike Swaim. Swaim, in his Rapid Delivery/Big Dog Recycling/Goshen Auto Recyclers #48, kept him mount in front for several laps but would ultimately be passed on lap eleven. The driver making the pass was the Ram Jack Foundation Repair #11 entry of Joe Maricle from Veneta.

Maricle, who placed second the night before, was mighty quick but would be caught and a great three car race would develop for the lead between Maricle, Swaim, and Matt Cordell. Ultimately it would be Cordell getting out in front via the inside line and would lead the rest of the way. It would be Cordell’s first win in just his second start in the Cartwright’s Automotive & Welding Center/Secure Transportation/BDR Racing #51 machine.

Mike Swaim would place second and finishing behind him in third was Maricle. Melvin Walker of Goshen would end his evening in fourth driving the Froggy’s Towing/Big B Tire/Springfield Auto Recyclers #00 followed by the D&D Automotive/Harris Machine & Design/A-1 Auto Supply #7D of James Deatherage from Cottage Grove. Joe Maricle was quickest in qualifying with a time of 18.342 seconds and would go on to win the trophy dash. Heat race victors were Matt Cordell and Melvin Walker.

The Cottage Grove Speedway will have another action-packed night of excitement on Saturday August 10th for Welt & Welt Night. It also will be a night full of games, giveaways, and more courtesy of the fine folks at Welt & Welt. Classes competing include the 360 Sprints, Northwest Extreme Sprints, and Street Stocks while also added to the card are the Late Models.
