Payton Freeman collects $5,000 in first Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series triumph

Collects $5,000 Mark Fields Memorial opener at Thunderhill

COMMERCE, Ga. (09/24/24) – Payton Freeman claimed his first career Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series victory on Friday night with a flag-to-flag triumph in the Mark Fields Memorial opener at Thunderhill Raceway Park aboard his Coltman Farms Racing / Freeman Plumbing / Georgia Recycling Group No. F1 Rocket Chassis / Cornett Racing Engine Super Late Model.

Freeman repelled series point-leader Brandon Overon in the 30-lap feature to secure his second win of the season and the $5,000 payday.

“I knew we had a good race car there, we just needed to try to get a good takeoff there and try to get out front,” Freeman said. “We had lapped traffic there and I really didn’t want to get off that bottom (line) ya know and I tried the top there for a little while and Brandon (Overton) got me and luckily the caution come out. Sometimes (it's better (to be) lucky than good, we were able correct that and make good decisions.”

Payton Freeman returned to the racetrack Friday afternoon and unloaded his Freeman Plumbing No. F1 at Thunderhill Raceway Park (Summertown, Tenn.) to compete in the two-day Mark Fields Memorial with the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series.

As 36 Super Late Models descended to the track for night one, Freeman ripped off the fastest lap in his qualifying which automatically locked him into the evening's feature and earned him the pole position. In the 30-lap main event, Payton was challenged for the lead multiple times by a few different drivers but eventually held on to collect the $5,000 payday. Freeman outran Brandon Overton and Tanner English to the checkered flag in his first-career victory with the series.

With the field expanding to 38 entries for Saturday's $15,000-to-win main event, Payton qualified 10th-quickest before picking up the final transfer spot in his heat race. Starting 16th in the 50-lap finale, Freeman was an early retiree and finished 19th.
