Shelpman Wins the SWJ Triple Crown (FULL Write Up & Results for 9.14.24)
Imperial, PA (9.15.24)
Military & First Responder Night was a success at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile on Saturday night, and it was headlined by the Josh Langer Memorial for the Fuel Required Hobby Stocks, which was the final leg of the Stephen W. Johnson Triple Crown. Stephen Shelpman (25R), from Bethel Park, dominated the event and picked up his fifth win in his fifth start in the O’Patchen-owned 25R, which sealed the deal on the Triple Crown win for Shelpman (25R). John Mollick (4J), from Toronto, Ohio, led all 15 laps of the RUSH Sprint Car feature to bring home the win, while Daryl Charlier (74), from Midway, picked up another win for the Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stocks. Brock Pinkerous (555), from Ellenville, New York, dominated the Rohrich Automotive/Chevy Performance RUSH Late Model feature and picked up the win, while Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, got his sixth win of the season and two in a row when he won the All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns feature, and Jacob Chipps (38D), from Cumberland, West Virginia, picked up another win in the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinder feature.
17 Fuel Required Hobby Stocks were on hand on Saturday night for the third leg of the Stephen W. Johnson Triple Crown, which doubled as the Josh Langer Memorial Race. Stephen Shelpman (25R) flat-out dominated the event, starting with setting the 25.070 fast-time in qualifying. He then went on to win the first heat race, won the Dash, and started on the pole in the 15-lap main event with his teammate Garrett O’Patchen (25) flanked to his outside. When the green flag dropped at the start of the event, Shelpman (25R) jumped out to an early lead. However, lap two saw the first caution, forcing a re-rack of the field. Shelpman (25R) now had Logan Koteles (64K), from Stockdale, flanked to his outside. When green replaced yellow, Shelpman (25R) took off like a rocket to retain his lead over the field. Laps three, four, and five had Shelpman (25R) leading the event with L. Koteles (64K) in second and O’Patchen (25) in third. Another caution slowed the pace on lap six, and Shelpman (25R) again chose the inside on the restart and took off like a rocket once again with L. Koteles (64K) in second and his brother Jonathan Koteles (2K) moving up to third on the restart. Despite another caution on lap 10, Shelpman (25R) led all laps of the event and went on to clinch the 2024 Stephen W. Johnson Triple Crown. He was followed by L. Koteles (64K) in second, O’Patchen in third, Marc Corio (14) in fourth, and Joe Brown Sr (74) rounded out the top five. Shelpman (25R) won heat race number one, and L. Koteles (64K) won the second heat race. John Greynolds (17) was the hard charger, starting P17 and finishing P10.
In the RUSH Sprint Car 15-lap feature, Gale Ruth Jr (24), from Pleasantville, started on the pole with “Jammin” Johnny Mollick (4J) starting on the outside in second. When the green flag dropped, Mollick (4J) quickly took over the lead. Lap three had Mollick (4J) still leading, Arnie Kent (9), from New Castle, in second, and Brent Rhebergen (68), from Clymer, New York, in third. Mollick (4J) began to contend with lapped traffic by lap seven, and by lap 10, he had a full straightaway lead over the field. With the race going green to checkers in record fashion, Mollick (4J) led all laps in the event to pick up the RUSH Wingless Sprint Car win. He was followed by Kent (9) in second, Blaze Meyers (41) in third, Rhebergen (68) in fourth, and Ruth Jr (24) rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were Meyers (41) and Mollick (4J).
15 Rohrich Automotive/Chevy Performance RUSH Late Models were on hand on Saturday night, and Brock Pinkerous (555) started on the pole in their 20-lap main event, while Kassidy Kamicker (72B), from Aliquippa, started to his outside in second. The second row consisted of Brandon Burgoon (60), from McDonald, starting in third, and Mike Reft (9R), from Pittsburgh, starting in fourth. When flagman Jeff Poro dropped the green flag at the start of the event, track officials called a “no-start” and made the field line up for a complete restart. On the second attempt, Pinkerous (555) came away with the early lead with Kamicker (72B) in tow. By lap eight, Pinkerous (555) had almost a full straightaway lead over the field. Burgoon (60) took second away from Kamicker (72B) on lap 16; however, it wasn’t enough as Pinkerous (555) led all 20 laps in the event and cruised to his first Rohrich Automotive/Chevy Performance RUSH Late Model win at PPMS. Burgoon (60) finished in the runner-up spot, while Kamicker (72B) finished third, Reft (9R) finished fourth, and Cody Koteles (5X) completed the top five. The heat race winners were Kamicker (72B) and Burgoon (60).
In the Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stock 15-lap feature, Daryl Charlier (74) started on the pole with Sam Eichelberger (17), from Level Green, flanked to his outside, starting in second. The second row had Jason Fosnaught (J19), from Tarentum, starting in third, and Larry Kugel (00), from Youngstown, Ohio, starting in fourth. When the green flag waved, Charlier (74) had the lead by lap two. The race went from green to checkered in record fashion as Charlier (74) picked up his third Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stock PPMS win of the season. Jordan Perkins (13J), from New Castle, finished in second, Nick Kocuba (10) finished in third, Dale Tuche (310) in fourth, and Tony Magill (M5), from Jefferson Hills, rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were Shelpman (17S) and Kocuba (10).
The Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinder 12-lap feature had Tyler Hollister (69), from Bulger, starting on the pole with Ray Tichnor (16), from Elco, flanked to his outside and starting in second. When the green flag dropped, Jacob Chipps (38D) had the early lead on lap one with T. Hollister (69) in tow. On lap four, John Gill (19), from Burgettstown, took over second and forced T. Hollister (69) back to third, as Chipps (38D) continued to pad his lead over the field. By lap nine, Chipps (38D) had a full straightaway lead over the rest of the field, and he cruised to the finish line to pick up another Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinder win. He was followed by T. Hollister (69) in second, Seth Nedrow (26), from Stahlstown, in third, Tichnor (16) in fourth, and Tanya Charlier (29M), from Midway, rounded out the top five. The heat race winner was Chipps (38D).
Hunter Vohn (124), from Industry, started on the pole in the All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns eight-lap feature, while Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, started to his outside in second. Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, started third, and Nathan Olenik (99) started in fourth. When the green flag waved at the start of the event, Snatchko (56) and Kokolis (91) raced side-by-side for the lead, with Kokolis (91) taking the lead on lap one and Snatchko (56) settling into second. The duo ran this way for all eight laps of the event, with Kokolis (91) picking up win number six on the season and back-to-back wins. Snatchko (56) took the runner-up spot, Olenik (99) finished third, Kane Zupancic (11) finished in fourth, and Vohn (124) rounded out the five-car field. The heat race winner was Kokolis (91).
