Cody Thompson takes on IMCA Super Nationals

Coming off a $10,000 victory at Rocket Raceway Park in Petty, Texas, Cody Thompson turned his attention to the Hawkeye State on the first week in September as he competed in the ultra-prestigious IMCA Super Nationals. Thompson was one of a staggering 223 IMCA Modified entrants at the famed 3/8-mile Boone (Iowa) Speedway when the Modified portion of the 42nd annual event kicked off on Wednesday.

Thompson began the Wednesday program with a runner-up result in his heat race aboard his Team Harris Auto Racing No. 25c Modified. He started 23rd in his 25-lap A-Main and suffered a DNF, ultimately ending the night with a 22nd-place result.

The next day, Thompson was forced into a B-Main after his heat and came home 15th, closing his bid for a 25-lap feature appearance. Also on Thursday, he set the quickest time in his All-Star Last Chance Qualifier group, putting him in Friday’s All-Star Invitational.

On Friday, Thompson raced from eighth to second in his heat, positioning him 18th on the grid to begin his 25-lap A-Main. He picked up seven spots to come home 11th. Additionally, he started 27th in the 30-lap, $1,000-to-win All-Star Invitational race. However, he ran into trouble early and recorded a 28th-place result after being unable to finish.

Leading up to Saturday’s $10,000-to-win finale, Thompson grabbed third in his Last Chance Heat and took eighth in his Last Chance A Feature, bringing his event to a close before the 40-lap “Big Dance.”
