Dereck Ramirez
Pair of USMTS top-10 finishes for Ramirez at 81 Speedway
Dereck Ramirez returned to the Summit USMTS trail on Friday and Saturday for the second edition of the Ed Gressel Memorial at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas.
On Friday, with 35 USMTS Modifieds at the 3/8-mile track, Ramirez drove to fifth-place results in both his heat race and B-Main. He started 21st on the grid in the 35-lap, $5,000-to-win feature and marched to a ninth-place finish, earning the evening’s FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award.
Saturday’s $10,000-to-win program brought 40 USMTS competitors to 81 Speedway, where Ramirez turned in another strong performance in his Boomtest Well Service No. 4R Modified. After a fifth-to-first run in his heat, Ramirez began the 40-lap A-Main from the fifth position. He spent several laps in the runner-up spot in the main event before ultimately coming home fifth. He took the checkered flag behind Jake O’Neil, Jake Timm, Mark Smith and Rodney Sanders.
Ramirez, the 2021 USMTS champion, is now 14th in this year's series points standings.
Prior to the Ed Gressel Memorial, slated USMTS shows in Nebraska at Off Road Speedway on Tuesday and Beatrice Speedway on Wednesday were rained out.
