The Big Deal turns to tough deal for Mullens
Tanner Mullens took on The Big Deal at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in search of a six-figure payday. Unfortunately, his event went upside down.
When the One Nation Under Modifieds (ONUM)-sanctioned event kicked off on Wednesday, Mullens was one of 145 Modified drivers at the 1/3-mile clay oval in Fountain City, Wisconsin. He stopped the clock with the sixth-quickest time in his group qualifying session and competed in preliminary action on Friday.
Mullens took fifth in his heat race on Friday evening and transferred into the feature after finishing fourth in his B-Main. He started shotgun on the field in the night’s 30-lap, $5,000-to-win main event and climbed six positions to come home 18th.
On Saturday, Mullens’ total qualifying points started him in the C-Main in the alphabet soup of races leading up to the 100-lap, $100,001-to-win finale. Mullens finished as runner-up in the first race and started 22nd in the B-Main. In the 20-lapper, two cars in front of Mullens collected his No. 02 car and caused him to flip. He walked away unscathed, but his event ended with a DNF and 24th-place result in the race.
His team is currently building a new car for the upcoming slate of Summit USMTS competition.
