DEESE ENDS WINLESS LATE MODEL STREAK DATING TO AUGUST 2012

HAGERSTOWN, MD – After Roy Deese Jr. lost the lead to Steve Axtell Jr., it appeared he was destined to finish second Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol, but he battled to retake the lead and stay on top for the final five circuits to post his first win of the season and more importantly, the first triumph for the eight time Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic Late Model Champion and current point leader from Laurel Md. since August 11, 2012.
Justin Weaver recorded a third triumph in the Malloy Ford Late Model Sportsman feature with Mike Corbin leading the final six circuits for his eighth K.Lynn Management Pure Stock victory. Gary Proctor was back in victory lane for his fifth win in the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stocks while Michael Warrenfeltz recorded his first ever win in the Cochran Auctioneers Four Cylinder feature.
The Late Models started with a four car invert with Deese Jr. starting from the pole position and jumping out front as fifth starting Steve Axtell Jr. was quickly into the runner up spot ahead of Bo Feathers and Jason Miller.
Seventh starter Marvin Winters moved into fourth by the third lap and while Axtell took the lead from Deese on the fifth lap and opened a comfortable lead. Deese, Feathers and Winters had a good battle going as Feathers took second on the 11th lap with Winters moving into third three laps later before the first caution came out. Feathers came up lame on the restart as Trever Feathers was now in the picture with Winters dropping to fourth on the restart.
Deese began his assault on Axtell Jr. on the 19th lap and after several attempts, secured the lead on lap 22. He drove on to win over him by .838 seconds.
“I have no idea why I’m here,” Deese said. “The car wasn’t that great. I just finally found something up high. I hate getting passed and after a couple of them passed me, I said ‘I’m going to make the top work or put it in the trees and do something better with the thing.’ I knew Steve was on a softer tire, I pretty much think he was, and we were on a harder tire. I knew not to be impatient early and at the end there the longer I run it, the better it felt. The car got loose on me the biggest part of the race, but that went away. It was a good battle.”
In his quest to break the eight championship tie with Nathan Durboraw and be the overall leader, Deese came into the race with only three points over Winters.
“Marvin has been fast,” he said. “It’s going to be a heck of a battle to the end. We have to get faster. Dad is at the garage seven days a week with me. It it’s not fast, it’s not because we’re not trying.”
Feathers, Winters and Allen Brannon completed the top five. D.J. Myers was sixth followed by Miller, C.S. Fitzgerald, Bo Feathers and Keith Walls Winters and Andy Anderson won the heats.
With a five car invert in the Late Model Sportsman feature, Justin Weaver of Williamsport sped into the lead with fifth starting Mike Walls moving into the runner up spot on the second lap.
Following a lap eight caution, sixth starting Terry Flaherty challenged Walls and took the spot on the 11th lap with 16th starter Kyle Lear joining the front three car procession.
Weaver continued on with a two-three car length lead until the checkered waved with his season third win over Flaherty by .48 second.
“We got a good start on the initial green, but man, we’ve been chasing this car all night,” Weaver said. “It was a little loose on rotation. Mike and Flaherty were both quick. I told myself ‘It was either get up on the wheel and win a race or finish second’ so I had to wheel the thing.”
Walls, Lear and Chad Myers followed. M.Walls, Kris Eaton, and Rodney Walls won the heats.
Starting on the Pure Stock pole with a five car invert, Jamie Zentmyer pulled to the front over Brian Miller as Mike Corbin was on the move from seventh. Corbin took second on the fourth lap, chased down Zentmyer, began challenging on lap seven and assumed the lead three laps later as he drove on for a 3.8 second victory over Zentmyer. Corbin and Frank Dibella were the heat winners.
It was round eight for Gary Proctor of nearby Big Pool in the Hobby Stocks. Proctor charged past Jamie Mills on the sixth lap and challenged Kenny Thomas from the eighth lap until the 12th before driving under and leading the final three laps for his eighth triumph with Thomas trailing by ten lengths. Mills and Proctor were the heat winners.
Michael Warrenfeltz, Hagerstown, assumed the Four Cylinder lead over Bill Kressler on the start as Matt Williamson went around Kressler and into the runner up spot on the eighth lap but Warrenfeltz held him off by .026 second to capture his first ever victory
