Fifth-place finish in World Finals prelim at The Dirt Track at Charlotte

Bob Cullen Racing and Brian Shirley rolled into The Dirt Track at Charlotte (Concord, N.C.) on Wednesday as the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series season wrapped up the with 17th running of the World Finals.

With the massive 74-car field divided into two groups for a pair of qualifying rounds, Brian recorded the eighth-fastest time in the first round before going fifth-quick in the second session.

Back in action on Thursday, Shirley raced into the $15,000-to-win opener with a consolation victory after missing a transfer spot by one car in his heat. Starting in 19th, Brian was involved an opening lap tangle that resulted in a 25th-place outing.

On Friday, Brian’s second-place showing in his heat race sent him into the redraw. Receiving the ninth-starting position, Shirley muscled forward four spots in the 35-lap affair to register a fifth-place finish. He followed Ricky Thornton Jr., Dale McDowell, Chris Madden, and Tim McCreadie across the line.

The weekend drew to a close with Shirley sneaking into the Saturday’s $25,000-to-win World Finals finale with the third-and-final transfer spot in his heat. Pinned on the ninth row for the 50-lapper, Brian ran as high as ninth before ultimately retiring with two laps remaining.

Brian finished sixth in the final World of Outlaw point standings.
