McCowan Records Pair of Podium Finishes in Weekend MLRA Action
Dillon McCowan hit the ground running in Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) competition over the weekend with new look Sonic Drive In No. 8 Longhorn Super Late Model. He raced to a podium finish in Friday night's Ron Jenkins Memorial opener at Lucas Oil Speedway (Wheatland, Mo.).
Thirty-four Super Late Models were on hand at the state-of-the-art 3/8-mile oval. McCowan started the night by qualifying sixth fastest in his time trial group before racing to a runner-up finish in his heat race.
Starting the 30-lap $5,000-to-win feature from the seventh-starting spot, Dillon passed four competitors to register a third-place finish behind Tyler Stevens and Chad Simpson.
The second round of the Ron Jenkins Memorial event was held on Saturday evening at Lucas Oil Speedway (Wheatland, Mo.) and Dillon qualified second fastest in his time trial group to earn the pole for his heat race. He unfortunately slipped to a third-place finish in his heat, but rebounded to charge from 11th-to-sixth in the 40-lap finale.
The three-race weekend concluded on Sunday evening at Moberly (Mo.) Motorsports Park with the annual Weiner Nationals. Twenty-seven competitors converged on the Missouri oval for the $10,000-to-win program. Dillon found himself behind the eight ball early in the night with the 11th fastest time in qualifying.
After racing to a second-place finish in his heat race, McCowan started fifth on the feature grid. He passed two drivers in the 30-lap finale to earn his second podium finish of the holiday weekend. He crossed the finish line behind Bobby Pierce and Chris Simpson with Chad Simpson and Justin Duty completing the Top-5 finishers.
