Chase Burda Masters Owosso Speedway

A packed house crowded in to watch the first running of the Masters of the Pros to be hosted at the Owosso Speedway after traveling all over the United States for several years.

First up was the MacAllister Rental Sport Compacts C Feature, which would see a repeat winner in Daniel Abercrombie being declared the winner. Daryl McBride would cross the line first, but unfortunately for the driver who primarily competes on dirt, there was a discrepancy in post race technical inspection. Finishing second would be Braydyn Loop, a first time visitor to the Big O. Josh Shiver would complete the podium positions, with Don Burton and Maddy Orta rounding out the top five.

For just the second time in 2023 a driver who was NOT Zane Cruz managed to find victory lane in the Reefer Peterbilt All American Trucks. Darren Burton, filling in for Brad Reseigh who was on vacation, would manage to take the truck to victory lane after a valiant drive from ninth on the starting grid. Zane Cruz would give it his all to try to continue his win streak, but would come up one spot short. A returning Junior Gokee was third over Greg Long III and Greg Long Jr. Cruz was quickest in qualifying with a 18.813.

Next up would be the 184 lap Masters of the Pros, the Crown Jewel of the 2023 schedule for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour. Kyle Crump would look to pick up where he left off after the series last visit and would lead the opening 50 laps, before a tangle off of a restart would see Crump, Chase Burda, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Carson Hocevar all end up tangling, ending Crump’s night. Hocevar would then trade the lead back and forth with Evan Shotko as we went in to the lap 100 tire and fuel break. Austin Hull would take the lead by virtue of taking no tires under the break, but would quickly hand the lead back over to Hocevar. Hocevar, Burda, and Shotko would then set the pace for most of the back half of the race, until lap 159. At that point Burda took the lead for good as his main competitors faded in the deep waters. Burda went on to claim the $10,000 pay day. Dan Leeck was second over Steve Dorer, Michael Simko, and David Liaeff. Burda was also fastest in qualifying, turning a 14.841.

The Valley Truck Center Modifieds would be next up with an adventurous feature event. David McManus would claim his fourth victory of the season, but behind him it seemed like a battle of last car standing as attrition ate through the field. When the dust settled Aaron Taylor survived to finish second Curtis Spencer was third with Damian Lytle and Larry Wallace setting season high marks in the top five. Spencer was quickest in qualifying with a 15.245.

The M&K Truck Center Pure Stocks would be another exciting event, as the field seemed to have battles going all over the track! Lonnie Saumier claimed victory after a hard fought battle with Jason Spencer that would end prematurely as they made contact and Spencer was forced to go to the end of the field. This would see Kyle Callahan move up to finish a season high runner up over Dan Gokee. Bryan Thompson had a strong fourth place run and Jason Spencer was able to race his way back up to a top five finish. Spencer also set the mark in qualifying with an 18.085.

The remaining two MacAllister Rental Sport Compact Features would finish off the night. First up would be the B feature. Mitch Dorin would take the victory, his first at Owosso of the year, after battle mechanical and handling woes just about every time he made the trip to Owosso! Dominick Salander ended his own streak of bad luck to finish second, while Jeff Asmus, Dan Hassard, and Marcus Starnes completed the top five. The A feature saw Ryan Hollister bring out his potent Dodge Neon for the first time in 2023, and made it worth his trip as he ended up in victory lane while giving rave revues of the revitalized Owosso Speedway. Nicholas Murdock extended his lead in points by virtue of his second place finish, Bryson Hosner, Damian Watters, and Adam Whitaker were the rest of the top five. Fastest Sport Compact qualifier was Murdock with a 17.677
