Mullens takes two USMTS Masters top-5 finishes at Cedar Lake

Tanner Mullens and his No. 02 Dirt Modified were among the front runners during each night of this weekend’s Summit United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) event at Cedar Lake Speedway (New Richmond, Wisconsin),

The three-day USMTS Masters kicked off on Thursday when 45 competitors took part in the event’s $3,000-to-win opening night at the 3/8-mile oval. Mullens steered to a heat race victory when the program commenced and started the 40-lap A-Main from the inside of the fourth row. He methodically moved forward throughout the race and took a third-place finish behind Carlos Ahumada Jr. and Will Krup. Clayton Wagamon and Dylan Thornton finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

With the purse increased to $5,000, Friday’s racing program also attracted 45 USMTS entrants. Mullens was strong again, turning in a second-place heat race result. He started 10th for the 45-lap A-Main and advanced five spots to finish fifth, chasing Cayden Carter, Dustin Sorensen, Jake O’Neil and Tom Berry Jr. to the checkered flag.

However, Mullens hurt his engine in the feature, necessitating a swap before the final night of action kicked off the following evening.

Forty-six USMTS Modifieds were on the property on Saturday looking to earn the night’s $11,000 top prize in the USMTS Masters finale. Mullens came home third in his heat and snuck into the 50-lap A-Main with a fifth-place result in his B-Feature. He started deep in the field in the 23rd spot but moved forward to finish 12th despite the engine change.

Mullens jumped five positions in the USMTS standings during the Cedar Lake event and now sits seventh in points.
