Ryan Unzicker

Unzicker runner-up in MARS stop at Spoon River

Kicking off his Memorial Day weekend with the MARS Late Model Championship, Ryan Unzicker invaded Farmer City Raceway (Farmer City, Ill.) on Friday afternoon to pilot his Brucker Farms No. 24 Late Model.

With 32 Late Models entered for the seventh stop of the tour, Unzicker got off to a hot start with a heat race victory but mechanical issues surfaced in the feature that resulted in an early exit. Taking the green in fourth, Ryan suffered a broken fuel pump fitting, sidelining him on lap 22.

For another $5,000-to-win MARS event on Saturday at Fairbury Speedway (Fairbury, Ill.), Ryan’s fourth-to-second run in his heat race positioned him on the fourth row for the feature. Breaking into the top-five, Unzicker gained three positions in the 40-lapper to register a fifth-place finish.

The Memorial Day weekend drew to a close on Sunday at Spoon River Speedway (Banner, Ill.) with Unzicker qualifying for the finale via an eight-lap heat victory. With $5,000 on the line, Ryan inched forward two spots in the 40-lap affair to finish second. He chased Jason Feger to the checkers with Rich Bell, Tommy Sheppard Jr., and Payton Freeman completing the top-five finishers.
